Performance and microbial mechanism of eletrotrophic bio-cathode denitrification under low temperature

Meizhen Tang et al.

Summary: Insufficient carbon and low temperature hinder biological nitrogen removal in wastewater. A novel autotrophic denitrification technique using cold-tolerant electrotrophic cathodic microbes is developed in this study, where electrical current is used as a source of electrons. The results show that the microbial communities enriched with cold-tolerant electrotrophic cathodic microbes in the integrated MFC (RW) system can effectively remove NH4+-N and achieve simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND), while the RO system has lower removal efficiency. The main electrotrophic cathodic denitrifying bacteria in RW system are Thauera, Pesudomonas, and Hydrogenophaga, which can degrade ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite through autotrophic denitrification and cathodic-driven bio-electrochemical denitrification.

Combined partial denitrification/anammox process for nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment

Hussein E. Al-Hazmi et al.

Summary: Recently, the combined partial denitrification and anammox (PD/anammox) process using organic matter in municipal wastewater has gained attention for sustainable N removal. It offers advantages such as reduced dissolved oxygen demand, lower organic carbon requirement, less excess sludge production, and lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional nitrification-denitrification. This review discusses the latest improvements in PD/anammox systems and focuses on the production/consumption pathways of critical intermediate NO2-. The C/N ratio and concentration of dosed organic carbon are crucial for optimal efficiency, as overgrowth of denitrifying bacteria can negatively impact anammox activity. Microorganism competition in single-stage PD/anammox systems plays a key role in achieving efficient N removal from mainstream wastewater. Challenges and limitations in recognizing inhibition mechanisms and performance inhibitors are also addressed. Future research should explore combining PD/anammox with other processes and developing self-supporting bacterial systems to enhance total nitrogen removal efficiency.

The effect of sulfamethoxazole on nitrogen removal and electricity generation in a tidal flow constructed wetland coupled with a microbial fuel cell system: Microbial response

Xiang Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of sulfamethoxazole concentration on nitrogen removal efficiency and electricity generation in tidal flow constructed wetlands coupled with microbial fuel cells (TFCW-MFCs). It also analyzes the microbial response to system performance using high-throughput sequencing. The results show that the presence of sulfamethoxazole affects the efficiency of nitrogen removal and electricity generation, as well as the composition and functions of microbial communities.

Evaluation of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy as a First-Line Typing Tool for the Identification of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing Klebsiella pneumoniae Outbreaks in the Hospital Setting

Jun Hao Wang-Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of FTIR as a first-line tool for the detection of ESBL-Kp outbreaks and compares it with WGS. The results demonstrate that FTIR has better consistency in clustering and can be used for rapid and cost-effective outbreak detection, while WGS is used for outbreak confirmation and isolate characterization.

Electroactive bacterial community augmentation enhances the performance of a pilot scale constructed wetland microbial fuel cell for treatment of textile dye wastewater

Dishant Patel et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that bioaugmentation with a newly enriched electroactive bacterial community DC5 significantly improved the performance of the HSCW-MFC system treating textile dye wastewater, resulting in enhanced COD and ADMI removal rates as well as an increased maximum power density. Genera such as Exiguobacterium, Desulfovibrio, and Macellibacteroides played significant roles in the improved efficiency of the system.

Technologies to recover nitrogen from livestock manure-A review

Bishnu Pandey et al.

Summary: Livestock industry is a major emitter of ammonia globally, with nitrogen in livestock manure linked to water contamination. Recovering nitrogen from livestock manure can reduce environmental impact and create marketable nitrogenous fertilizers. Technologies like air stripping, thermal vacuum stripping, and gas-permeable membrane stripping show promise for livestock farmers.
