Electronic Structure Engineering of Single-Atom Ru Sites via Co-N4 Sites for Bifunctional pH-Universal Water Splitting

Chengli Rong et al.

Summary: The development of bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalysts that are efficient and stable over a wide range of pH is crucial but challenging. This study reports an atomically dispersed Ru/Co dual-sites catalyst anchored on N-doped carbon (Ru/Co-N-C) for excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. The catalyst shows superior performance compared to benchmark catalysts Pt/C and RuO2, with low overpotentials and high current densities. Theoretical calculations and experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of Co-N4 sites into Ru/Co-N-C modifies the electronic structure of Ru and enhances the bonding strength with oxygen/hydrogen intermediate species, leading to improved OER and HER performance. Furthermore, the incorporation of Co-N4 sites improves the corrosion-resistance of Ru/Co-N-C during electrolysis. The Ru/Co-N-C catalyst has been successfully applied in a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer and shows stable operation at a high current density.

Silver based single atom catalyst with heteroatom coordination environment as high performance oxygen reduction reaction catalyst

Rui Sui et al.

Summary: In this study, an Ag-based single atom catalyst, Ag-1-h-NPCISC, with heteroatom coordination was synthesized and shown to greatly improve the performance of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A zinc-air battery with Ag-1-h-NPCISC as the air electrode achieved a high peak power density, attributed to the advantages of the hollow structure, single atom metal center, and heteroatom coordination environment. The role of Cu1-O3 species in single-atom Cu/ZrO2 catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation

Huibo Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reports a novel copper-based catalyst with isolated active copper sites for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. The Cu-1-O-3 units in the Cu-Zr catalyst are found to contribute solely to methanol synthesis, while small copper clusters or nanoparticles with Cu-Cu structural patterns are responsible for the formation of CO by-product. Additionally, the migration of Cu-1-O-3 units to the catalyst surface during the catalytic process accelerates CO2 hydrogenation. These findings extend the application potential of single-atom catalysts for thermal catalytic CO2 hydrogenation and provide insights for the design of high-performance copper-based catalysts to meet industrial demand.
