Remarkably enhanced recoverable energy density in lead-free relaxor Ba0.94Ca0.06Ti1-xSnxO3 ceramics by the synergistic effect of nano-domains and refined grains

Xiaopei Zhu et al.

Summary: The energy storage performance of specific ceramic materials was systematically studied in this research, with enhancements in breakdown strength and recoverable energy density achieved by adjusting doping content. The improved energy storage properties were mainly attributed to the optimization of grain structure and the disruption of polar order.

Multimode transistors and neural networks based on ion-dynamic capacitance

Xiaoci Liang et al.

Summary: This study presents a concise model to describe the transient ion-dynamic capacitance in electrolyte-gated transistors and confirms the accuracy of the theory. Plasticity, high apparent mobility, sharp subthreshold swing, and memristive conductance can be achieved in a single transistor by appropriately programming the interfacial ion concentrations or matching the scan speed with ion motions. Multimode transistors with different capabilities were fabricated using common solid-state electrolyte films and were experimentally confirmed. It was also shown in software that these multimode devices could be used to create neural networks that can be switched between different types of artificial neural networks.

Atomic-resolution electron microscopy of nanoscale local structure in lead-based relaxor ferroelectrics

Abinash Kumar et al.

Summary: Scanning transmission electron microscopy is used to quantify the structural complexity of relaxor ferroelectric systems, revealing the spatial correlation between nanoscale heterogeneities and local polarization. Three main contributions related to Ti content include chemical order, oxygen octahedral tilt, and oxygen octahedral distortion, which disrupt long-range polarization and lead to nanoscale domain formation and the relaxor response. Nanoscale regions of monoclinic-like distortion directly correlate with Ti content and electromechanical performance, validating models needed for the development of the next generation of relaxor ferroelectrics.
