Critical REV Size of Multiphase Flow in Porous Media for Upscaling by Pore-Scale Modeling

Tong Liu et al.

Summary: Digital rock analysis provides a powerful tool for predicting geophysical properties and studying fluid and interfacial transport mechanisms in rocks, but there is a struggle to balance scanning resolution and sample size due to imaging technology limitations. The critical size of REV for multiphase flow in porous media is found beyond twice that for single-phase flow in this study, indicating the influence of phase interaction and wettability on relative permeability-saturation curve in multiphase flow.

Prediction of three-phase relative permeabilities of Berea sandstone using lattice Boltzmann method

Sheng Li et al.

Summary: The study on three-phase flows through a pore network of Berea sandstone reveals that as the saturation of each fluid increases, so does its relative permeability. The specific interfacial lengths between wetting and nonwetting fluids show different trends with changing saturation levels. Additionally, the relative permeabilities of wetting and nonwetting fluids display varying trends when the fluids become less wetting or nonwetting. The presence of a spreading layer stabilizes the specific interfacial length between wetting and nonwetting fluids at a low level, and the relative permeability of wetting or nonwetting fluids increases with an increase in the viscosity ratio.
