Biomanufacturing human tissues via organ building blocks

Kayla J. Wolf et al.

Summary: The construction of human organs on demand is a solution to address the shortage of organ donors. However, replicating the complexity of native organs remains a significant challenge. The use of organ building blocks offers a pathway to create organ-specific tissues with desired organization.

Engineered Microgels-Their Manufacturing and Biomedical Applications

Hamzah Alzanbaki et al.

Summary: Microgels are hydrogel particles with micrometer-scale diameters that can be fabricated in various shapes and sizes. They are increasingly used in biomedical applications and biofabrication due to their unique features. Fabrication methods for microgels are divided into top-down and bottom-up approaches, each with its own advantages and limitations.

Data-driven physics-informed constitutive metamodeling of complex fluids: A multifidelity neural network (MFNN) framework

Mohammadamin Mahmoudabadbozchelou et al.

Summary: In this work, a multifidelity neural network (MFNN) algorithm is introduced for data-driven constitutive metamodeling of complex fluids, which outperforms classical deep neural networks (DNNs) in predicting rheological behavior accurately. By incorporating physical intuition into the neural network and leveraging a large dataset of synthetic low-fidelity data, the MFNN algorithms are able to accurately predict the effects of temperature, salt concentration, and aging on complex fluids.

Influence of Microgel Fabrication Technique on Granular Hydrogel Properties

Victoria G. Muir et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of three microgel fabrication techniques on granular hydrogel properties, finding that different fabrication methods result in varying microgel properties which in turn affect the mechanics, porosity, and injectability of the granular hydrogels. Tuning the amount of cross-linker used during microgel fabrication can adjust the properties of the granular hydrogels, and the granular hydrogels exhibit general shear-thinning and self-healing properties.

An Injectable Meta-Biomaterial: From Design and Simulation to In Vivo Shaping and Tissue induction

Amelie Beduer et al.

Summary: A novel type of injectable biomaterial with elastic softening transition properties has been developed, allowing in vivo shaping and induction of stable 3D vascularized tissue. Through extensive numerical simulation, this injectable meta-biomaterial can reversibly change stiffness during deformation, potentially providing new perspectives in soft tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Metrics for Benchmarking and Uncertainty Quantification: Quality, Applicability, and Best Practices for Machine Learning in Chemistry

Gaurav Vishwakarma et al.

Summary: This review highlights two important issues to consider when applying machine learning in the chemical and materials domain: statistical loss function metrics for model validation and benchmarking, and uncertainty quantification of predictions. These topics are often overlooked by chemists, but are crucial for comparing model performance and developing successful machine learning applications in chemistry.
