Stability challenges for the commercialization of perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells

Leiping Duan et al.

Summary: Driven by the need for increased power conversion efficiency and simplified fabrication, tandem solar cells (TSCs) comprising silicon (Si) bottom cells and wide-bandgap perovskite top cells have emerged as a promising technology. However, the stability of perovskite remains a challenge for widespread commercialization. In this review, we discuss the current state of perovskite-Si TSC stability and identify key degradation mechanisms at the cell and module levels. We also consider economic factors and propose research directions to achieve the long-term stability necessary for successful commercialization.

Junjie Zhou et al.

Summary: Novel organic hole transport materials (HTMs), named T3, with high hole mobility, good band alignment and ease of fabrication, are designed and synthesized. The fluorine-substituted T3 (T3-F) exhibits the best band alignment and hole extraction properties, resulting in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with outstanding power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 24.85% and 24.03% for aperture areas of 0.1 and 1 cm², respectively. The simple structure and tunable performance of T3 inspire further optimization for efficient PSCs.

Revealing the Role of Methylammonium Iodide Purity on the Vapor-Phase Deposition Process of Perovskites

Marcel Ross et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the influence of impurities on the evaporation dynamics of methylammonium iodide (MAI). It is found that low purity MAI mainly sublimes, while high purity MAI tends to form decomposition products. These findings contribute to solving the challenges in the evaporation process, guiding future material selections, and improving the reproducibility of solar cell fabrication.

Opportunities and Challenges for Perovskite Solar Cells Based on Vacuum Thermal Evaporation

Joo-Hong Lee et al.

Summary: Developing a scalable fabrication process for perovskite solar cells is crucial for the market readiness of perovskite photovoltaic technology. While solution-based scalable processes have received most research efforts, vacuum thermal evaporation processes, despite their advantages, have not been extensively studied. This article discusses the possible opportunities and challenges in utilizing vacuum thermal evaporation for mass production of large-area perovskite solar modules, highlighting the need for further research.

Efficient and Stable Graded CsPbI3-xBrx Perovskite Solar Cells and Submodules by Orthogonal Processable Spray Coating

Jin Hyuck Heo et al.

Summary: In this study, inorganic CsPbI2Br-based perovskite thin films with a well-defined CsPbI3-xBrx composition gradient were fabricated using a scalable and orthogonal processable spray-coating approach. The graded structure broadened the absorption wavelength range, increased carrier lifetime, and improved charge separation and collection efficiency within a device stack. The power conversion efficiency reached 16.81% for a 0.096-cm(2) PSC, and a monolithically integrated perovskite sub-module achieved an efficiency of 13.82% with less than 9% degradation over 1,000 hours of continuous 1-sun light soaking.

Zero-Dimensional Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Lead Halides and Their Post-Synthesis Reversible Transformation into Three-Dimensional Perovskites

Bas A. H. Huisman et al.

Summary: A zero-dimensional (0D) mixed-halide hybrid organic-inorganic structure has been successfully synthesized through a solvent-free mechanochemical approach, showing sharp absorption features in the near-UV. It has been demonstrated that this 0D structure can be reversibly transformed into a three-dimensional perovskite phase by simple thermal annealing in air. This work presents a new approach to studying hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites and related 0D structures.

The lattice reconstruction of Cs-introduced FAPbI1.80Br1.20 enables improved stability for perovskite solar cells

Shuang Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents a facile method to enhance the structural stability and photovoltaic performance of inorganic-organic hybrid perovskite solar cells by partially substituting Cs+ cations for FA(+) cations. The incorporation of Cs+ resulted in improved tolerance factor, inhibited deep defect states, and prevented phase transition, leading to substantial enhancements in power conversion efficiency and stability of the PSCs. The lattice shrinkage, reduction of specific traps, and inhibition of phase transition induced by 15% Cs+ were observed through XPS, XRD, and NMR techniques, proving the effectiveness of this approach in fabricating stable and efficient PSCs.
