Optical potentials for the rare-isotope beam era

C. Hebborn et al.

Summary: We review recent progress in nuclear optical potentials and emphasize the need for further developments, especially in regions away from stability. An improved description of nuclear reactions involving short-lived isotopes has significant benefits for fundamental science discoveries and applications. We outline the methods used to build optical potentials and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. We also provide open challenges and recommendations to advance nuclear reaction studies in the rare-isotope beam era.

Uncertainty-quantified phenomenological optical potentials for single-nucleon scattering

C. D. Pruitt et al.

Summary: Optical-model potentials (OMPs) are crucial in nuclear reaction calculations, but the uncertainty of widely used phenomenological OMPs has not been fully characterized. In this study, we assign well-calibrated uncertainties to two representative global OMPs using parameter inference. We show that a lack of outlier rejection and a systematic underestimation of experimental uncertainties lead to bias and overconfidence in best-fit parameter values. Our updated, uncertainty-quantified OMPs address these issues and improve scattering predictions against experimental data.

Global Microscopic Description of Nucleon-Nucleus Scattering with Quantified Uncertainties

T. R. Whitehead et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a microscopic global nucleon-nucleus optical potential, utilizing an improved local density approximation and modeling with five nuclear forces. The study provides an analysis tool for next-generation rare-isotope beam experiments, with successful computation of optical potentials for 1800 target nuclei without using any adjustable parameters. The uncertainty bands for elastic scattering were generated to handle potential experimental errors.

Measurement of 238U(n, n′ γ) cross section data and their impact on reaction models

M. Kerveno et al.

Summary: A precise measurement of (n, xn gamma) reaction cross sections on U-238 has been performed, with the aim of inferring the total neutron inelastic scattering cross section. Experimental results are compared to literature data to identify inaccuracies in reaction mechanisms and challenge existing models.
