Modulation of the cell wall protein Ecm33p in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae improves the production of small metabolites

Veronica Ramos-Viana et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of modulating cell wall composition on the production and secretion of small metabolites in yeast cell factories. The results showed that overexpression and deletion of the cell wall-related gene ECM33 significantly improved the yield of p-coumaric acid and beta-carotene. The study also found that altering the cell wall did not affect the secretion of small molecules.

The oleaginous yeast Starmerella bombicola reveals limitations of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model for fatty acid transport studies

Jose Manuel Salvador Lopez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatty acid transport in the nonconventional yeast Starmerella bombicola using existing knowledge from the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The results show differences in fatty acid export between the two yeasts, which not only advance knowledge of fatty acid physiology in S. bombicola but also improve understanding of S. cerevisiae as a model organism.
