Single-Collision Statistics Reveal a Global Mechanism Driven by Sample History for Contact Electrification in Granular Media

Galien Grosjean et al.

Summary: Models for contact electrification in granular media usually assume a local charge-driving parameter, but our experiments reveal a global charging behavior instead. This behavior is coherent over the entire sample and can be reset by cleaning and baking, suggesting it is not intrinsic to the material but acquired from its history. The charging behavior is randomly and irreversibly affected by changes in relative humidity, indicating the importance of adsorbates, particularly water, in the charge-transfer process.

Quantifying nanoscale charge density features of contact-charged surfaces with an FEM/KPFM-hybrid approach

Felix Pertl et al.

Summary: This study presents a strategy using finite-element method (FEM) simulations to determine the Green's function of the Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) system. By applying this strategy, the researchers were able to quantitatively extract surface charge densities and fine details from contact-charged surfaces.
