Minimally invasive capillary blood sampling methods

Michael S. F. Hoffman et al.

Summary: This manuscript provides a comprehensive overview of capillary blood sampling techniques, including methods for releasing blood from capillaries, comparison of different sampling methods, and methods for enhancing capillary blood collection. The authors suggest that microneedles are preferred for pediatric blood collection due to their ability to collect blood without pain, and jet injection may be useful for both blood collection and drug delivery.

Frustoconical porous microneedle for electroosmotic transdermal drug delivery

Daigo Terutsuki et al.

Summary: A truncated cone-shaped porous microneedle made of poly-glycidyl methacrylate was studied as a minimally invasive tool for transdermal drug delivery. The frustoconical PMN significantly reduced the resistance of the skin by expanding the stratum corneum without penetrating into the skin. The PAMPS-modified frustoconical PMN effectively enhances the penetration of larger molecules, such as dextran.

Minimally invasive skin sampling and transcriptome analysis using microneedles for skin type biomarker research

Seo Hyeong Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, we used microneedles to obtain skin specimens and performed transcriptome analysis. The results revealed that various biomarkers were correlated with age, non-invasive device measurements, and visual assessment of skin conditions. Microneedle skin sampling is a new and minimally invasive option for transcriptome analysis and can be helpful for diagnosing and evaluating the efficacy of treatments as well as classifying different skin types.

A touch-actuated glucose sensor fully integrated with microneedle array and reverse iontophoresis for diabetes monitoring

Yanxiang Cheng et al.

Summary: A touch-actuated biosensor was developed for monitoring glucose in interstitial fluid, using a combination of skin penetration and reverse iontophoresis extraction. The biosensor showed significant improvement in glucose extraction flux compared to traditional reverse iontophoresis, both in vitro and in vivo. The integration of this biosensor, a wireless electrochemical detector, and a smartphone application enabled the development of a wearable glucose monitoring system, which showed high correlation with commercially available blood glucometer results.

An epidermal wearable microfluidic patch for simultaneous sampling, storage, and analysis of biofluids with counterion monitoring

Brince Paul Kunnel et al.

Summary: Simultaneous access to different biofluids allows for accurate analysis of multiple analytes, enabling precise diagnosis and appropriate medication. Establishing a relationship between markers in different biofluids and blood biomarkers aids in non-invasive diagnosis. However, the challenge lies in the advanced microfluidic coupled device design. To address this, an epidermal wearable bio-fluidic patch is presented, which enables simultaneous extraction, sampling, and storage of sweat and interstitial fluid, as well as monitoring of their corresponding counterions.
