Zhihong Gao et al.

Summary: The application of bio-manganese redox cycling provides promise for removing contaminants in groundwater, but the feasibility of constructing the system through community assembly is unclear. In this study, Mn-reducing and Mn-oxidizing strains synergistically removed 94.67% of 17 beta-estradiol within 12 hours. The results showed that the system accelerated the production of reactive oxygen species and Mn(III), promoting the removal of 17 beta-estradiol.

Thermal induced changes of rice straw phytolith in relation to arsenic release: A perspective of rice straw arsenic under open burning

Minh N. Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that silica phase in rice straw can encapsulate arsenic (As), leading to a tighter association between As and phytolith during open burning or heat-treatment, reducing As dissolution and delaying its cycle in rice ecosystems. The ban of on-site open burning to reduce air pollution will alter the handling routines of straw, impacting the cycle of straw phytolith and As route.

Soft-computing modeling and multiresponse optimization for nutrient removal process from municipal wastewater using microalgae

S. M. Zakir Hossain et al.

Summary: This study develops empirical models for predicting the removal efficiencies of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus from municipal wastewater using microalgae. The effects of temperature, light-dark cycle, and nitrate-to-phosphate ratio on simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus were identified. Three competitive soft-computing techniques were used to construct predictive models, and the support vector regression (SVR) model was found to be the most accurate. The SVR models were also able to predict removal efficiencies under different conditions when simulated data was added. Finally, the models were hybridized with a genetic algorithm to optimize nutrient removal efficiency.

Microbial induced calcium precipitation based anaerobic immobilized biofilm reactor for fluoride, calcium, and nitrate removal from groundwater

Wenshuo Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a quartz sand fixed biofilm reactor containing Cupriavidus sp. W12 was established to simultaneously remove calcium (Ca2+), fluoride (F-), and nitrate (NO3-N) from groundwater. Optimum operating parameters and defluoridation mechanism were explored, and the microbial community structure under different pH environments were compared and analyzed. Result show that under the optimal conditions, the removal efficiencies of Ca2+, F-, and NO3-N were 58.97%, 91.93%, and 100% respectively. The defluoridation mechanism is attributed to the synergetic effects of ion exchange, co-precipitation, and chemi-sorption. Cupriavidus is the dominant bacteria in the bioreactor throughout the experiment, and it shows a prominent advantage at pH of 7.0. This research provides an application foundation for anaerobic microbial induced cal-cium precipitation (MICP) bioremediation of Ca2+, F-, and NO3-N from groundwater.

Enhanced phenol biodegradation by Burkholderia PHL 5 with the assistant of nitrogen

Anping Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, a Burkholderia PHL5 strain with efficient phenol degradation capacity was isolated from activated sludge, and its degradation mechanism and performance were investigated. The strain was found to mineralize, assimilate, and degrade phenol into long-chain organic compounds, with the formation of catechol mediated by specific enzymes. Moreover, the strain was able to degrade phenol through a meta-ring opening cleavage pathway, producing two important organic intermediates. It was also observed that the degradation process of phenol by the strain was dependent on nitrogen, and nitrate could enhance phenol degradation. The initial phenol concentration and phenol vs. nitrate ratio were found to have a positive impact on phenol degradation.

Cornstalk biochar promoted the denitrification performance and cellulose degradation rate of Burkholderia sp. CF6

Changlun Chen et al.

Summary: The strain Burkholderia sp. CF6 showed denitrification and cellulose degradation abilities. The addition of cornstalk biochar promoted these capabilities, with biochar of 400 degrees C (BC400) showing the highest gaseous nitrogen conversion efficiency. BC400 also accelerated nitrate removal rate and shortened peak time of cellulase activity. The research provides insights on using agricultural waste for low C/N ratio wastewater treatment.
