Exploring the Applicability of the Semi-Empirical BRDF Models at Different Scales Using Airborne Multi-Angular Observations

Juan Cheng et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively evaluates the applicability of semi-empirical bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models for remote sensing data with 0.5-30 m spatial resolution and finds that these models are applicable at the 10 m pixel scale but not at the 0.5 m scale.

Revisiting the Performance of the Kernel-Driven BRDF Model Using Filtered High-Quality POLDER Observations

Hanliang Li et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the fitting ability of the kernel-driven model using a high-quality BRDF database and finds that the RTLSR model performs well under most observational conditions, but has poorer fitting ability over different land cover types and at high latitudes. A model combination strategy is also proposed, which achieves better performance at high latitudes.

Exploring the interrelated effects of soil background, canopy structure and sun-observer geometry on canopy photochemical reflectance index

Peiqi Yang

Summary: The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) is a method for monitoring photosynthetic light use efficiency. However, its relationship with LUE becomes complicated at the canopy scale. This study explores the role of soil background, canopy structure, and sun-observer geometry in determining canopy PRI. The analysis reveals that the deviation between canopy and leaf PRI is mainly due to soil background, and canopy structure and sun-observer geometry affect canopy PRI by altering the contribution of soil to canopy reflectance.

Shadow-Aware Nonlinear Spectral Unmixing for Hyperspectral Imagery

Guichen Zhang et al.

Summary: In this article, a physics-based spectral mixture model called the extended shadow multilinear mixing (ESMLM) model is proposed, which can adapt to different ground surface scenarios with varying illumination conditions and shadows. The model performs robustly and provides physically interpretable parameters that contain valuable information on the scene structures.
