Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between various lesions in slaughter pigs and meat inspection outcomes. Tail lesions were found to be associated with carcass condemnations, reduction in carcass weight, and impaired carcass quality. Hernias were also found to be associated with viscera condemnation and reduced carcass weight. These findings highlight the potential usefulness of ante-mortem inspection in predicting post-mortem outcomes.

The Evidence for a Causal Link Between Disease and Damaging Behavior in Pigs

Summary: Damaging behaviors, such as tail and ear biting, are common in pig production and negatively impact welfare and performance. Poor health and tail damage show high correlations within and between pig farms. There are common risk factors for both tail-biting and health problems, including respiratory, enteric, and locomotory diseases. Limited evidence supports two potential causal mechanisms linking damaging behaviors and health problems, either poor health increasing the risk of tail-biting or tail-biting causing poor health.

Predictivity of Antemortem Findings on Postmortem Inspection in Italian Heavy Pigs Slaughterhouses

Evaluation of Tail Lesions of Finishing Pigs at the Slaughterhouse: Associations With Herd-Level Observations

Summary: This study looked into the distribution of different types of tail lesions and their scoring at the slaughterhouse in relation to on-farm veterinary records. It was found that certain herd-level parameters, such as the use of wood enrichment and annual mortality rates, were associated with the proportions of tail lesions at the slaughterhouse. Detailed tail evaluation at the slaughterhouse shows potential in estimating the tail lesions and long-term welfare level on the farm.
