Development and validation of a circulating microRNA panel for the early detection of breast cancer

Ruiyang Zou et al.

Summary: This study conducted the largest comprehensive multi-center research to date and identified 30 dysregulated miRNAs associated with breast cancer. An optimized eight-miRNA panel was successfully validated in diverse ethnic groups and showed consistent performance. The panel has the potential to be used for breast cancer screening in conjunction with mammography.

Current and future burden of breast cancer: Global statistics for 2020 and 2040

Melina Arnold et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with over 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 deaths in 2020. There is significant geographic variation in incidence rates, with lower rates in some Asian and African countries and higher rates in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Northern America, and parts of Europe. Mortality rates show less variation, but transitioning countries still bear a disproportionate burden of breast cancer deaths. By 2040, the burden of breast cancer is predicted to increase further due to population growth and ageing. Global efforts are needed to address this growing burden, especially in transitioning countries where incidence rates are rising rapidly and mortality rates remain high.

Development of a microRNA Panel for Classification of Abnormal Mammograms for Breast Cancer

Ruiyang Zou et al.

Summary: Breast cancer screening using mammography often leads to false positive results, prompting unnecessary investigations. This study identified and validated a six-miRNA panel that can differentiate between malignant and benign breast lesions, showing potential for use alongside mammography. Results also revealed an increase in biomarker panel scores with tumor size, stage, and lymph node involvement.

Electrostatically Tunable Near-Infrared Plasmonic Resonances in Solution-Processed Atomically Thin NbSe2

Meng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study successfully achieved electrostatically modulated NIR plasmonic resonances over a range of approximately 360 cm(-1) in few-layer NbSe2 gratings, thanks to the enhanced electrostatics of atomically thin 2D materials and high-quality film produced by a solution method. NbSe2 plasmons, with their atomic thickness, provide strong field confinement and an additional degree of resonance frequency modulation.

Circulating microRNA breast cancer biomarker detection in patient sera with surface plasmon resonance imaging biosensor

Chi Lok Wong et al.

Summary: This article reports the detection of circulating miRNA as a breast cancer biomarker in patient sera using surface plasmon resonance imaging biosensor for the first time. The sensor was able to distinguish between malignant and benign cases with a 20% difference in intensity response, showing potential for distinguishing benignity and malignancy.
