Introducing a new concept for enhanced micro-energy harvesting of thermal fluctuations through the Marangoni effect

Santiago Madruga et al.

Summary: A new concept utilizing the Marangoni effect to enhance the conversion of ambient thermal fluctuations into electric power is presented, demonstrated through simulations on a micro-energy harvester. This concept is particularly advantageous in spacecraft environments, where microgravity makes Marangoni flows a dominant heat transfer mechanism, offering significant improvement in energy harvesting efficiency. The natural thermocapillary flows at the liquid interface under thermal gradients require no additional physical elements, providing a foundation for further optimization of thermoelectric devices for low-consumption electronics.

A core-shell structured diffusion-bubbling membrane for efficient oxygen separation: Formation and transport properties

Sergey Fedorov et al.

Summary: The newly developed core-shell structured molten oxide membranes with fast combined diffusion-bubbling oxygen mass transfer and theoretically infinite selectivity are of technological interest because of their high separation efficiency. In this study, a core-shell structured molten V2O5-Cu2O-based diffusion-bubbling membrane was prepared by thermal treatment. The effect of oxygen partial pressure on the thickness of the membrane shell is found, and the relationship between membrane shell thickness, oxygen partial pressure difference across the membrane, and oxygen permeation flux through the membrane is established.

A review on dual-phase oxygen transport membranes: from fundamentals to commercial deployment

Ragnar Kiebach et al.

Summary: Oxygen transport membranes (OTMs) are a promising technology for oxygen production, offering lower costs and power consumption compared to cryogenic air separation or pressure swing adsorption. Dual-phase OTMs, composed of a stable ionic conductor and electronic conductor composite, have advantages over single-phase membranes in terms of chemical and mechanical stability. However, challenges remain in their large-scale employment.

Thermocapillary convection in liquid-in-liquid capillary bridges due to a heating/cooling ring

A. H. Saifi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermocapillary convection and interface deformation of a liquid bridge surrounded by a heating/cooling ring in the presence of another immiscible liquid under the influence of gravity through 2D axisymmetric simulations. The results show that there is a significant difference in flow and heat transfer patterns between the heating and cooling cases. The interfacial velocity and bridge deformation are more stable when a cooling ring surrounds the liquid bridge. Moreover, a cooling ring reduces deformation, while a heating ring enhances interface deformation.

An Analysis of Bubble Migration in Horizontal Thermo-Capillarity Using the VOF Modeling

Ranjith Kumar et al.

Summary: Due to engineering applications, the movement of bubbles on heated surfaces has received significant attention. This numerical study investigates the migration of bubbles driven by thermo-capillary force under temperature gradients perpendicular to gravity. The results show that larger bubbles oscillate near their initial positions even with higher temperature gradients, while smaller bubbles exhibit significant movement under higher temperature gradients.

Reconciling bubble nucleation in explosive eruptions with geospeedometers

Sahand Hajimirza et al.

Summary: Plinian volcanic eruptions contain a large number of bubbles due to nucleation caused by magma decompression and volatile diffusion. Bubble number density serves as a proxy record of decompression rate and eruption dynamics intensity. By modeling bubble nucleation, it is shown that BND provides a consistent record of time-averaged decompression rate if nucleation is heterogeneous and facilitated by magnetite crystals.

Oxygen-Selective Diffusion-Bubbling Membranes with Core-Shell Structure: Bubble Dynamics and Unsteady Effects

Valery V. Belousov et al.

Summary: Oxygen, the second-largest industrial gas, is mainly produced using cryogenic air separation technology. However, the current low-temperature technology has reached its limit, leading to the need for alternative technologies. MIEC ceramic membranes and diffusion-bubbling molten oxide membranes show promise, but cost and performance issues need to be addressed. Understanding bubble dynamics is crucial for controlling the transport properties of these membranes.
