The nexus between land use, land cover dynamics, and soil erosion: a case study of the Temecha watershed, upper Blue Nile basin, Ethiopia

Abineh Tilahun et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the dynamics of land use and land cover in the Ethiopian highlands from 1986 to 2020, estimate the mean annual soil erosion rates, identify erosion hotspot areas, and evaluate the impacts of land use change on soil loss. The results show that soil loss has been increasing over the years, particularly in agricultural areas. Urgent soil and water conservation measures are needed.

Land use/land cover dynamics driven changes in woody species diversity and ecosystem services value in tropical rainforest frontier: A 20-year history

Yericho Berhanu et al.

Summary: Land use/land cover change has a detrimental impact on woody species diversity and ecosystem service value in tropical forests. The study found that different land use/land cover types significantly influenced the richness, diversity, and evenness of woody species. The estimated total ecosystem service value decreased by 21.56% from 1999 to 2020. Conversion to mono-crop tea plantations led to the alteration of native species, expansion of exotic species, and reduction of ecosystem service value, indicating a negative impact on ecosystem integrity and stability in the future.

Assessing the impacts of different land uses and soil and water conservation interventions on runoff and sediment yield at different scales in the central highlands of Ethiopia

Tesfaye Yaekob et al.

Summary: The government of Ethiopia introduced a yearly mass campaign to address soil erosion and moisture stress, implementing various soil and water conservation (SWC) and water harvesting (WH) practices. This study assessed the impacts of different land uses, SWC, and WH interventions on water and suspended sediment yield in the central highlands of Ethiopia. The results showed that SWC practices reduced runoff and soil loss at both plot and watershed scales, although the effectiveness declined over time due to a lack of maintenance.

A commentary review on the use of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in the era of popular remote sensing

Sha Huang et al.

Summary: The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a popular index for vegetation assessment due to its simplicity and ability to be calculated with any multispectral sensor. However, considerations such as atmospheric effects, saturation phenomena, and sensor factors must be taken into account to ensure effective use of NDVI in various applications, particularly in the UAV user community.

Impact of land use/land cover changes on groundwater resources in Al Ain region of the United Arab Emirates using remote sensing and GIS techniques

Muhammad Usman Liaqat et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of land use/cover changes on groundwater table in Al Ain, UAE from 2006 to 2016, finding that agriculture/farms/oasis and urban areas expanded, leading to increased water demand and decreased natural sandy areas. The average groundwater depth also declined with expansion of urban and agriculture areas, indicating the need for sustainable management of land and groundwater resources.

Is this what success looks like? Mismatches between the aims, claims, and evidence used to demonstrate impact from knowledge exchange processes at the interface of environmental science and policy

Denis B. Karcher et al.

Summary: The study found that success in knowledge exchange at the interface of environmental science and policy comes in diverse forms, with a discrepancy between the ambitious goals studies aim for and the more modest achievements they evidence or claim. This indicates a need to better align goals with evaluation measures.

Land use land cover change in Kashmir Himalaya: Linking remote sensing with an indicator based DPSIR approach

Rehana Rasool et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the changes in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) in the Southern part of Kashmir Himalaya over a 27-year period. It finds that while cropland agriculture decreased the most (-5%), economically beneficial horticulture increased the most (+4.29%) during the study period. The changes in LULC are driven by various forces such as natural, demographic, and economic factors, resulting in pressures on land and environmental impacts. This study emphasizes the need for strict land use planning in Kashmir Himalayas to ensure food security and sustainability in the ecologically fragile environment. Understanding the complex interactions between human society and the environment is crucial for managing these complex systems.

The 30 m annual land cover dataset and its dynamics in China from 1990 to 2019

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: Land cover (LC) plays a crucial role in energy exchange and environmental impact. Rapid changes in land cover in China necessitate fine-scale monitoring. A new dataset, CLCD, based on Landsat data on the Google Earth Engine platform provides valuable insights into China's land cover dynamics from 1990 to 2019.

A Review on Land Use and Land Cover Change in Ethiopian Basins

Motuma Shiferaw Regasa et al.

Summary: Land Use Land Cover (LULC) changes in Ethiopia are mainly driven by population pressure, resettlement programs, climate change, and other anthropogenic factors. Studies have shown that in the past decades, the landscape has transitioned from natural to agricultural land use, commercial farmland, and built-up areas due to increasing anthropogenic pressure. The challenge lies in forecasting future LULC changes at the watershed scale to develop basin-wide management strategies for the future.

Aid or exploitation?: Food-for-work, cash-for-work, and the production of beneficiary-workers in Ethiopia and Haiti

Lauren Carruth et al.

Summary: The global aid industry is not only composed of beneficiaries and aid workers, but also beneficiary-workers who are required to work in exchange for assistance without being officially recognized or adequately compensated. This labor is designed to discipline the poor rather than alleviate poverty or spur economic development, raising questions about the ethics and appropriateness of work-for-aid projects.
