Raman Linewidth Contributions from Four-Phonon and Electron-Phonon Interactions in Graphene

Zherui Han et al.

Summary: This study considers multiple factors such as phonon anharmonicity, phonon renormalization, and electron-phonon coupling on the Raman peak frequency shift and linewidth in graphene samples. The results show that four-phonon scattering contributes significantly to the linewidth, increasing with temperature, while the temperature dependence of electron-phonon interactions reverses above a certain doping threshold.

Heat Conduction Theory Including Phonon Coherence

Zhongwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Understanding and quantifying the coherence of thermal excitations is an important problem in physics. The traditional phonon gas model fails to capture this coherence. In this study, a new heat conduction formalism is proposed that combines the phonon gas model and the wave nature of thermal phonons. The theory and simulations reveal two types of coherence in different temperature ranges.

How coherence is governing diffuson heat transfer in amorphous solids

Zhongwei Zhang et al.

Summary: By using a heat conduction theory incorporating coherence, this study reveals that the strong phase correlation between local and non-propagating modes triggers thermal transport in amorphous materials. It further provides insights into the temperature and length dependences of thermal conductivity and uncovers the wave nature of thermal vibrations.

Efficient First-Principles Methodology for the Calculation of the All-Phonon Inelastic Scattering in Solids

Marios Zacharias et al.

Summary: Inelastic scattering experiments are crucial for mapping fundamental excitations of solids, with a particular focus on the role of multiphonon processes for phonon excitations. A new first-principles methodology has been developed to calculate the all-phonon quantum mechanical structure factor of solids, demonstrating the significance of multiphonon processes in the scattering patterns of black phosphorus. This approach represents a significant step towards interpreting static and time-resolved electron, x-ray, and neutron inelastic scattering data.

Coherent thermal transport in nano-phononic crystals: An overview

Zhongwei Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the latest research on coherent thermal transport in nano-phononic crystals, including low-temperature thermal transport, minimum thermal conductivity, Anderson localization, etc. The controversies between different simulation methods in describing wave-like/coherent and particle-like/incoherent thermal phonons are discussed, and various effects on coherent thermal transport are reviewed.

Thermal conductivity minimum of graded superlattices due to phonon localization

Yangyu Guo et al.

Summary: Anderson localization of thermal phonons has been demonstrated in graded superlattices with short-range order and long-range disorder, showing a minimum thermal conductivity with system length due to the exponential decay of transmission to a non-zero constant. Clear evidence of localization is provided through combined analysis of participation ratio, transmission, and real-space phonon number density distribution based on quantum transport simulation, which would advance heat conduction engineering by leveraging the wave nature of phonons.

Generalized decay law for particlelike and wavelike thermal phonons

Zhongwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Direct atomic simulations reveal a thermally activated phonon mode with a large population of elastic wave packets, characterized by a wide distribution of lifetimes and coherence times. A generalized law for phonon number decay accounting for coherent effects was derived, introducing a delay proportional to the square of the coherence time before the conventional exponential decay due to phonon-phonon scattering. This additional regime leads to a moderate increase in relaxation times and a different dependence of phonon relaxation.
