Implementing the exoskeleton Ekso GTTM for gait rehabilitation in a stroke unit - feasibility, functional benefits and patient experiences

Ellen Hoyer et al.

Summary: This study explored the feasibility of introducing exoskeleton gait training for subacute stroke patients in a specialized rehabilitation hospital and examined the functional benefits and patient experiences using the Ekso GT(TM) exoskeleton. The results showed that Ekso GT(TM) can be safely implemented as a training tool in ordinary rehabilitation, leading to improvements in functional outcomes and high patient satisfaction.

Systematic review on wearable lower-limb exoskeletons for gait training in neuromuscular impairments

Antonio Rodriguez-Fernandez et al.

Summary: Wearable lower-limb exoskeletons show potential for improving walking ability, promoting exercise, and enhancing daily living activities for individuals with neuromuscular impairments. However, current limitations such as bulky devices and limited evidence of benefits in short-term trials highlight the need for further research and clinical trials to demonstrate their efficacy.

EEG Fractal Analysis Reflects Brain Impairment after Stroke

Maria Rubega et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fractal changes in resting-state EEG signals after stroke, finding that both Higuchi index and Tortuosity values were significantly lower in stroke survivors, indicating less complex brain activity. These metrics show promise in tracking behavioral changes post-stroke and may be reliable biomarkers for neurorehabilitation.

Robotic Exoskeleton Gait Training in Stroke: An Electromyography-Based Evaluation

Valeria Longatelli et al.

Summary: Recovery of symmetric and efficient walking is a key goal of rehabilitation in stroke patients. Using overground exoskeletons in gait training can improve gait functionality and neuromuscular patterns, with the experimental group showing more controlled neuromuscular patterns compared to the control group.

Cortical correlates in upright dynamic and static balance in the elderly

Maria Rubega et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neurophysiological mechanisms of balance control in the elderly compared to younger adults during static and dynamic balance tests. The results showed that older adults exhibit different cortical and muscular activation patterns, particularly when cognitive tasks are involved, suggesting the use of preferential motor strategies for postural control. This knowledge could contribute to the development of age-specific rehabilitative and assistive interventions.

Fractal Analysis of Lower Back Acceleration Profiles in balance tasks

Roberto Di Marco et al.

Summary: The study examines fractal properties of body sway during standing in younger and older adults, finding that Higuchi's fractal dimension and Tortuosity can distinguish between different postural tasks. These findings suggest a promising application in describing postural control complexity across different age groups, including pathological populations.

Experimental Protocol to Assess Neuromuscular Plasticity Induced by an Exoskeleton Training Session

Roberto Di Marco et al.

Summary: Exoskeleton gait rehabilitation is an emerging research area aimed at improving function in the elderly and individuals with central nervous system lesions. Using interfaces based on physiological signals can help robotic systems better adapt to the physiological changes of the user. This study aims to explore the potential of exoskeleton rehabilitation therapy by quantifying neuro-muscular plasticity and predicting motor trajectory from physiological signals.
