Hospitalization and mortality for acute exacerbation of asthma: an Italian population-based study

Ombretta Para et al.

Summary: Asthma exacerbation requiring hospitalization is not uncommon among adults in Italy. Older age, high comorbidity index, and use of ventilator support are associated with higher in-hospital mortality. These findings should be used to develop appropriate healthcare policies for asthma patients.

Measuring and reporting treatment adherence: What can we learn by comparing two respiratory conditions?

Holly Tibble et al.

Summary: Medication non-adherence can lead to increased morbidity, mortality, and side effects, while reducing effectiveness. Methodological issues exist in measuring and reporting adherence for asthma and TB, with variations between and within diseases. The communicable nature of TB has made dose-by-dose monitoring a recommended treatment standard.

Utility of fractional exhaled nitric oxide suppression as a prediction tool for progression to biologic therapy

Claire A. Butler et al.

Summary: The FeNOSuppT test can help predict whether asthma patients will progress to needing biologic agents or being discharged from specialist care. Patients with a positive FeNOSuppT, who maintain optimized F-ENO levels, can maintain asthma control with high-dose ICS/long-acting beta 2 agonist and be discharged from specialist care.
