The Influence of Shear on Deep Convection Initiation. Part II: Simulations

John M. Peters et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the role of vertical wind shear in deep convection initiation (DCI) through numerical simulations and theoretical modeling. The results demonstrate that when the initial moist updraft exceeds a certain threshold, it undergoes evolution and eventually reaches a quasi-steady self-sustaining state.

The Influence of Shear on Deep Convection Initiation. Part I: Theory

John M. Peters et al.

Summary: This article introduces a novel hypothesis about the role of vertical wind shear in the initiation of deep convection. According to this hypothesis, the effects of wind shear on initial updrafts can lead to different outcomes, with some evolving into a steady state and others succumbing to dilution and disappearing.

A large-eddy simulation study of deep-convection initiation through the collision of two sea-breeze fronts

Shizuo Fu et al.

Summary: Deep convection initiation (DCI) is crucial in producing severe weather, and through large-eddy simulations it was found that DCI occurs through the development of three generations of convection, with the collision of sea-breeze fronts playing a key role in this process.

A high-resolution unified observational data product of mesoscale convective systems and isolated deep convection in the United States for 2004-2017

Summary: The study presents climatological characteristics of MCS and IDC in the eastern United States, showing that MCS are larger and longer-lasting than IDC, but IDC occurs more frequently. IDC precipitation peaks in the Southeast in summer, while MCS precipitation is significant in all seasons, especially in the Great Plains.
