Enhanced out-of-plane piezoelectricity and carrier mobility in Janus γ- Sn2XY ( X/Y= S, Se, Te) monolayers: A first-principles prediction

Tuan V. Vu et al.

Summary: In this study, we designed Janus gamma- Sn2XY (XY= S, Se, Te) monolayers and predicted their piezoelectricity and carrier mobility using first-principles simulations. We found that Janus gamma- Sn2XY have indirect semiconducting characteristics with a camel's back-like dispersion in the top valence band. It was discovered that Janus gamma- Sn2XY are piezoelectric with high out-of-plane piezoelectric coefficients. Our calculations also revealed high electron mobility in the Janus gamma- Sn2XY monolayers, especially in gamma-Sn2STe, which exceeds 10(5) cm(2) V-1 s(-1).

Switching Rashba spin-splitting by reversing electric-field direction

San-Dong Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, it is proposed that the Rashba spin-splitting can be controlled by reversing the electric-field direction. The Janus monolayer RbKNaBi is used as a concrete example to demonstrate this proposal through first-principles calculations. The results show that by only reversing the electric-field direction, the Rashba spin-splitting can be switched within a certain electric-field region.

Electronic, spintronic, and piezoelectric properties of new Janus ZnAXY (A = Si, Ge, Sn, and X, Y = S, Se, Te) monolayers

Nayereh Ghobadi et al.

Summary: Inspired by Janus group-III monochalcogenides, we propose ZnAXY (A = Si, Ge, Sn, and X/Y = S, Se, Te, X < Y) monolayers as a novel structure with broken inversion and mirror symmetry. Eight out of nine ZnAXY monolayers are found to be dynamically stable, and their thermal stability is confirmed by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. These monolayers exhibit spin-orbit coupling effects, Zeeman-type spin splitting, Rashba spin splitting, and Mexican hat dispersion, making them potential candidates for spintronic applications. Additionally, these structures possess high piezoelectric coefficients, making them appealing alternatives for prevalent piezoelectric materials.

Effects of strain and electric field on electronic and optical properties of monolayer γ-GeX (X = S, Se and Te)

Vuong Van Thanh et al.

Summary: Using density-functional theory calculations, we investigated the mechanical, electronic, and optical properties of monolayer GeX (X = S, Se, Te) with gamma structure. Our findings show that mechanical anisotropy is highest in gamma-GeS due to its strong ionic bond. The energy band gap and valley positions can be controlled by applying tensile and biaxial strains. In addition, the optical absorptions of monolayer gamma-GeX in the visible-light region are comparable to those of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides like MoS2. The strain engineering significantly modifies the optical absorption in the visible light, while the effect of the external electric field on the optical properties is weak.
