Photoinduced RAFT Step-Growth Polymerization toward Degradable Living Polymer Networks

Zhuang Li et al.

Summary: The application of reversible degenerative radical polymerization (RDRP) in constructing polymer networks (PNs) provides a convenient way to fabricate 3D objects with the ability to be posttransformed. However, the polymerization mechanism of RDRP mainly relies on chain-growth polymerization, limiting its wide application for different polymeric materials with various functionalities. In this study, a method utilizing a photoinduced RAFT step-growth polymerization is presented, which can overcome the limitations of chain-growth polymerization and produce postfunctionalizable PNs. Additionally, the PNs prepared by this method are degradable and stimuli-responsive due to the introduction of ester groups.

Radical-promoted single-unit monomer insertion (SUMI) [ aka. reversible-deactivation radical addition (RDRA)]

Cyrille Boyer et al.

Summary: This article surveys the progress in the development of radical-promoted single-unit monomer insertion (SUMI) or reversible deactivation radical addition (RDRA) processes, with a focus on aminoxyl-[nitroxide-] mediated SUMI (NM-SUMI), reversible-addition-fragmentation chain transfer-SUMI (RAFT-SUMI), and atom-transfer radical addition (ATRA). The strategies for achieving selectivity in single unit insertion vs oligomerization and the progress towards discrete oligomer synthesis by consecutive SUMI reactions are discussed. The prospects of using radical-promoted SUMI in the synthesis of sequence-defined polymers are also examined.

Catalyst-Free, Visible-Light-Induced Step-Growth Polymerization by a Photo-RAFT Single-Unit Monomer Insertion Reaction

Zhuang Li et al.

Summary: This study presents a catalyst-free, visible-light-induced step growth polymerization method using a photo-RAFT single-unit monomer insertion reaction. Through this reaction, a pendant cationic RAFT agent can be generated in each repeating unit of the polymer backbone. Both cationic and radical side chain extensions were successfully realized, providing a facile approach for the postpolymerization of step-growth polymers for the development of various functional polymeric materials.

Evolutions of precision radical polymerizations from metal-catalyzed radical addition: living polymerization, step-growth polymerization, and monomer sequence control

Masami Kamigaito

Summary: Metal-catalyzed Kharasch addition or atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) is a highly efficient radical reaction for controlled syntheses of organic molecules. This review focuses on the development of metal-catalyzed living radical polymerizations, which offer control over various aspects of vinyl polymer structures. The article discusses reversible activation of carbon-halogen bonds, step-growth radical polymerizations of designed monomers, simultaneous chain- and step-growth radical polymerization for degradable vinyl copolymers, and vinyl monomer sequence control using iterative ATRAs and other controlled polymerizations.

Photomediated RAFT step-growth polymerization with maleimide monomers

Samantha Marie Clouthier et al.

Summary: In this study, photomediated RAFT step-growth polymerization was conducted using a trithiocarbonate-based CTA and a maleimide monomer, with and without the presence of a photocatalyst. The polymerization demonstrated appreciable rate under blue and green light irradiation without a catalyst, and extended to red light region in the presence of ZnTPP.

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer step-growth polymerization with commercially available inexpensive bis-maleimides

Parker T. Boeck et al.

Summary: Commercially available N-aromatic substituted bismaleimides were used in RAFT step-growth polymerization with a bifunctional RAFT agent, resulting in polymers with moderate to high molecular weights. This advancement allows for the preparation of graft copolymers in a straightforward manner at a larger scale, increasing the accessibility of the previously reported methodology.

Reconsidering terms for mechanisms of polymer growth: the step-growth and chain-growth dilemma

Chin Han Chan et al.

Summary: The terms step-growth polymerization and chain-growth polymerization are commonly used to describe the two main mechanisms of polymer growth. However, these terms are confusing and do not accurately describe the differences between these methods. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) has recommended alternative terms, but these also have shortcomings. Additionally, textbooks use a variety of terms to describe polymer synthesis methods, adding to the confusion. The synthesis of polymers one monomer unit at a time also poses a dilemma as it does not fit into either of the traditional growth mechanisms. The IUPAC's mission includes developing tools for clear communication of chemical knowledge, and this paper aims to address concerns with the commonly used terms for classifying polymer synthesis methods, inviting dialogue from the polymer community to resolve these issues.

Reversible-Addition Fragmentation Chain Transfer Step-Growth Polymerization

Joji Tanaka et al.

Summary: In this study, RAFT step-growth polymerization was achieved by combining RAFT and step-growth polymerization mechanisms, resulting in backbone repeat units with a pendant RAFT agent that can form molecular brush polymers in a second polymerization step. The cleavable backbone functionality allows the transformation of brushlike polymers into linear chains of uniform size under stimuli.

PET-RAFT Polymerization: Mechanistic Perspectives for Future Materials

Michael L. Allegrezza et al.

Summary: In the past decade, photochemistry has become a growing area in organic and polymer chemistry, with the use of light to drive polymerization providing spatial and temporal control over the reaction. The mechanism of electron versus energy transfer in photoinduced polymerization processes like PET-RAFT is still debated in the literature, with conflicting reports on the underlying process. Different catalytic systems in PET-RAFT have unique characteristics, and there is no consensus in the current literature across all processes.
