Origin of the Enhanced Reactivity in the ortho C-H Borylation of Benzaldehydes with BBr3

Ken Yamazaki et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism of the metal-free ortho C-H borylation of benzaldehyde derivatives using a transient imine directing group was extensively investigated using DFT calculations. It was proposed that the experimentally observed reactivity enhancement may originate from the tunability of the destabilizing strain energies.

Remote steric control for undirected meta-selective C-H activation of arenes

Boobalan Ramadoss et al.

Summary: Regioselective functionalization of arenes is a challenging problem in organic synthesis. This study presents a strategy based on remote steric control, where a roof-like ligand protects the distant para site and enables selective activation of meta carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonds.

Diversification of Aryl Sulfonyl Compounds through Ligand-Controlled meta- and para-C-H Borylation

Yajun Wang et al.

Summary: Herein, we report a tunable meta- and para-selective C-H borylation of aryl sulfonyl compounds enabled by computationally designed ligands and iridium catalyst. This method is capable of accommodating a broad range of substrates under mild reaction conditions and can achieve gram-scale preparation with low iridium catalyst loading. Our method provides a general solution to installing functional groups at either meta- or para-position of aryl sulfones and aryl sulfonamides with good to excellent selectivity.

Emerging trends in C(sp3)-H borylation

Jiefeng Hu et al.

Summary: C-H bond activation and functionalization is a research hot topic in organic synthesis due to its special importance in both academic and industrial fields. C-H borylation, as a highly economic approach for generating organoborons, has attracted much attention. However, the selectivity of C(sp3)-H borylation still remains a challenge, primarily due to the ubiquity and low reactivity of alkanes.

Enzyme-like Supramolecular Iridium Catalysis Enabling C-H Bond Borylation of Pyridines with meta-Selectivity

Jonathan Trouve et al.

Summary: Utilizing secondary interactions between substrates and catalysts is a promising approach to discover selective transition metal catalysts for atom-economy C-H bond functionalization. The most powerful catalysts are often discovered through trial-and-error screening, as small stereo-electronic modifications within the substrate and catalyst can lead to vastly different reactivities.

Ir-catalyzed proximal and distal C-H borylation of arenes

Chabush Haldar et al.

Summary: Over the past two decades, C-H bond activation and functionalization reaction has been widely used for the construction of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Among them, iridium-catalyzed C-H bond activation and borylation reaction stands out. However, achieving distal (meta and para) selectivity in borylation reactions remains a challenge, with limited reports employing iridium catalysis for this purpose. Recent discoveries in catalyst engineering have shown promising results in selective borylation at proximal (ortho) positions for various substrates.
