Learning to Remove Clutter in Real-World GPR Images Using Hybrid Data

Hai-Han Sun et al.

Summary: This study presents a clutter-removal neural network (CR-Net) trained on a large-scale hybrid dataset to tackle the challenge of clutter removal in ground-penetrating radar (GPR) radargrams. The CR-Net integrates residual dense blocks (RDBs) into the U-Net architecture to enhance its capability in clutter suppression and target reflection restoration. Experimental results demonstrate that the CR-Net achieves superior performance over existing methods in removing clutter and restoring target responses in diverse real-world scenarios.

Artificial Neural Networks and Machine Learning techniques applied to Ground Penetrating Radar: A review

Xisto L. Travassos et al.

Summary: Ground Penetrating Radar is a multidisciplinary Nondestructive Evaluation technique that requires knowledge of electromagnetic wave propagation, material properties and antenna theory. Various signal post-processing methods aim to achieve detection, location and definition of target's geometrical and physical properties with a low false alarm rate. This work reviews the use of Artificial Neural Networks and Machine Learning for data interpretation of Ground Penetrating Radar surveys, showing how these computational techniques have advanced GPR from locating and testing to imaging and diagnosis approaches.

Landmine Detection Using Autoencoders on Multipolarization GPR Volumetric Data

Paolo Bestagini et al.

Summary: This article proposes a novel buried object detection technique for unexploded landmine discovery, using a specific type of convolutional neural network known as autoencoder to analyze ground penetrating radar (GPR) data with different polarizations. The method operates in an anomaly detection framework, training only on GPR data from landmine-free areas, and recognizing landmines as dissimilar objects to the soil in the training set. Experimental results show that this technique achieves high accuracy above 93 on challenging data sets with minimal training and no ad hoc data preprocessing.
