Impact of early palliative care on the quality of life in caregivers of cancer patients: A systematic review

Summary: This systematic review synthesized the implementation of early palliative care (EPC) on the quality of life (QoL) of caregivers of cancer patients. Eight studies were included in the review, and the results showed that EPC interventions improved the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being of caregivers, but did not show significant advantages in QoL compared to usual care. Further research on developing standard EPC protocols, multidisciplinary teams, and the timing of intervention for caregivers is strongly recommended.

Understanding cancer caregiver burden over time: Dyadic assessments of family cohesion, conflict and communication

Summary: This study examines the association between cancer communication concordance and family functioning (cohesion and conflict) among hematological cancer patient-caregiver dyads. The results show that caregiver burden decreases over time, and declining caregiver perceptions of family cohesion and increased conflict are associated with greater cancer communication discordance. Identifying and supporting caregivers with worsening communication and family function is important for intervention.

Fatigue and Vigilance-Related Factors in Family Caregivers of Patients With Advanced Cancer A Cross-sectional Study

Summary: The study found that fatigue and poor vigilance were common issues among family caregivers of patients with advanced cancer in Taiwan, with 95% experiencing these problems. Caregivers who spent more time caregiving, had no religious beliefs, had a job, or had a greater caregiver burden were more likely to experience fatigue. Healthcare providers should proactively assess and provide interventions for caregivers at risk for fatigue.
