Recognition-guided sulfate extraction and transport using tripodal hexaurea receptors

Si-Qi Chen et al.

Summary: This study successfully extracts sulfate anions from water to the organic phase using synthetic receptors. The sulfate-binding affinity of the receptors is dependent on the terminal substitutions, and the sulfate-extraction efficiency is consistent with the sulfate-binding affinity. The hexyl-chain-substituted receptor L-3 shows the ability to extract and release sulfate anions for multiple cycles.

Selective recognition and extraction of arsenate by a urea-functionalized tripodal receptor from competitive aqueous media

Sandeep Kumar Dey et al.

Summary: In this study, a second-generation hydrogen bond donor (HBD) anion receptor with an inner amide cavity and an outer urea cavity was developed. This receptor showed selective and efficient extraction of arsenate (AsO43-) from water, even in the presence of competitive oxoanions and halides. The X-ray structure analysis revealed the encapsulation of AsO43- in a pi-stacked dimeric capsular assembly of the receptor, demonstrating the successful recognition of pentavalent AsO43- trianion by the HBD receptor.

Bis[squaramido]ferrocenes as electrochemical sulfate receptors

Jakob D. E. Lane et al.

Summary: 1,1'-Bis[squaramido]ferrocenes (FcSq(2)) are introduced as electrochemically active scaffolds for sulfate recognition. FcSq(2) shows high affinity and selectivity towards sulfate in aqueous DMSO mixtures. The unique electrochemical response of FcSq(2) enables selective detection of sulfate.

Sulphate in freshwater ecosystems: A review of sources, biogeochemical cycles, ecotoxicological effects and bioremediation

Dominik Zak et al.

Summary: Sulphate concentrations in freshwater have been increasing globally over the past few decades, but the extent of its impact on ecosystems remains poorly understood. Sources of sulphate pollution include natural processes like weathering and anthropogenic activities such as mining and agriculture, affecting biogeochemical processes and potentially harming aquatic organisms and human health. Solutions such as bioremediation systems and wetland restoration may help mitigate these impacts.

Effects of elevated sulfate in eutrophic waters on the internal phosphate release under oxic conditions across the sediment-water interface

Jun Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing sulfate concentrations under oxic conditions result in higher levels of soluble reactive phosphorus in overlying waters, leading to an increase in the upward flux of phosphorus in eutrophic freshwater systems. Moreover, higher sulfate concentrations also elevate the concentrations of labile sulfur and iron in deep sediments, demonstrating that internal phosphorus release is influenced by sulfate penetration and subsequent reduction processes.

Positional isomeric effect of acyclic hosts on supramolecular recognition of anionic guests

Utsab Manna et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the research on anion coordination chemistry influenced by positional isomeric acyclic receptors in the last decade. It provides a detailed account of the underexplored area of anion recognition chemistry affected by positional isomerism of acyclic receptors, shedding light on the importance of isomeric systems in understanding fundamental anion-receptor chemistry.

Macrocyclic squaramides as ion pair receptors and fluorescent sensors selective towards sulfates

Marta Zaleskaya et al.

Summary: Through high dilution technique, four ion pair receptors were obtained and showed high affinity towards benzoates and sulfates, with more complex equilibria observed in sulfate binding. The ion pair receptor was found to recognize anions in an enhanced manner with the assistance of sodium or potassium cations.

An overview of CO32-/HCO3- binding by aerial CO2 fixation within the self-assemblies of hydrogen-bond donor scaffolds

Utsab Manna et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the fixation mechanism of atmospheric CO2 in self-assembled artificial receptors and discusses the structural aspects between host/host-assemblies and anions. Special emphasis is placed on the construction of typical supramolecular host-guest systems formed by absorbing atmospheric CO2, and the differential coordination behavior of these anions in aqueous or organic media is explored, along with their roles in other significant applications.
