Effect of the transition from more than adequate iodine to adequate iodine on national changes in the prevalence of thyroid disorders: repeat national cross-sectional surveys in China

Yongze Li et al.

Summary: The transition from excessive to adequate iodine status in mainland China did not lead to a significant increase in thyroid disorders, except for a higher prevalence of thyroid nodules. Additional studies are needed to understand the reasons behind the increased prevalence of thyroid nodules.

Secular Trends in the Prevalence of and Disability-Adjusted Life Years Due to Common Micronutrient Deficiencies in China From 1990 to 2019: An Age-Period-Cohort Study and Joinpoint Analysis

Haiying Chen et al.

Summary: This study used Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study data to elucidate trends in common micronutrient deficiencies in China from 1990 to 2019. The study found that the prevalence rates and associated DALYs of iodine, vitamin A, and dietary iron deficiencies decreased during this period. Different age groups and genders were affected by different types of micronutrient deficiencies.

Global, regional, and national burdens of common micronutrient deficiencies from 1990 to 2019: A secondary trend analysis based on the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study

Xu Han et al.

Summary: This study analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study to investigate trends in common micronutrient deficiencies from 1990 to 2019. The results showed a decrease in the prevalence rates of iodine deficiency, vitamin A deficiency, and dietary iron deficiency globally. The study also highlighted the higher burden of micronutrient deficiencies in low-social demographic index (SDI) countries. Policy makers can use these findings to implement cost-effective interventions, especially in low-SDI and low-healthcare access and quality (HAQ) index countries.

Distributions of serum thyroid-stimulating hormone in 2020 thyroid disease-free adults from areas with different iodine levels: a cross-sectional survey in China

B. Ren et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the distributions of serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in thyroid disease-free adults from areas with different iodine levels in China, and evaluate the relationship between TSH and free thyroxine (FT4), as well as analyze the factors affecting TSH levels. The study found that serum TSH concentrations were significantly higher in iodine-fortification areas and iodine-excessive areas compared to iodine-adequate areas, with females having higher TSH levels than males and no correlation between age and TSH levels. Additionally, factors such as body mass index (BMI), smoking status, education levels, and marital status were associated with TSH levels.

Iodine intake level and incidence of thyroid disease in adults in Shaanxi province: a cross-sectional study

Zhiwei Yu et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between adult iodine intake level and thyroid disease in Shaanxi area, finding that high iodine intake among adults is associated with hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, benign nodules, and thyroid cancer. Additionally, excessive iodine intake, age over 45 years, and female gender were found to be associated with the development of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC).

Estimated change in prevalence of abnormal thyroid-stimulating hormone levels in China according to the application of the kit-recommended or NACB standard reference interval

Yongze Li et al.

Summary: The NACB standard reference interval for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in Chinese adults reveals a lower estimated prevalence of supranormal TSH levels compared to the kit-recommended interval, suggesting the need for further assessment of TSH reference intervals in light of the significant public health implications of thyroid dysfunction in China's large population.
