Trainability of Dissipative Perceptron-Based Quantum Neural Networks

Kunal Sharma et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the gradient scaling performance of a recently proposed architecture called dissipative quantum neural networks (DQNNs), and finds that DQNNs can exhibit gradient vanishing. Moreover, we quantitatively bound the scaling of the gradient for DQNNs under different conditions and demonstrate that trainability is not always guaranteed.

Asynchronism and nonequilibrium phase transitions in (1+1)-dimensional quantum cellular automata

Edward Gillman et al.

Summary: The article introduces the applications of probabilistic cellular automata and quantum cellular automata in exploring non-equilibrium processes, and extends these models into genuinely quantum nonequilibrium models by introducing asynchronism. The study uses the classical contact process as an example and discovers evidence of asynchronism transition phenomenon.

Quantum and Classical Temporal Correlations in (1+1)D Quantum Cellular Automata

Edward Gillman et al.

Summary: The study involves using (1 + 1)-dimensional quantum cellular automata to investigate the evolution of entanglement and coherence near criticality in quantum systems. It shows that the dynamics of quantum correlations, particularly coherence, displays a universal power-law behavior close to criticality. The research estimates universal critical exponents for both entanglement and coherence in quantum systems belonging to the one-dimensional directed percolation universality class, introducing a key new critical exponent unique to quantum systems.

Quantum phases of matter on a 256-atom programmable quantum simulator

Sepehr Ebadi et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates a programmable quantum simulator based on deterministic arrays of neutral atoms, realizing a quantum spin model with tunable interactions and investigating various new quantum phases and interactions. These observations offer a new perspective on the study of complex quantum matter and pave the way for investigations of exotic quantum phases and hardware-efficient realization of quantum algorithms.

Entangled quantum cellular automata, physical complexity, and Goldilocks rules

Logan E. Hillberry et al.

Summary: Cellular automata are classical bits that interact and display diverse emergent behaviors; quantum cellular automata (QCA) can exhibit complexity by following 'Goldilocks rules' that balance activity and stasis. These rules generate robust dynamical features, network structure, and persistent entropy fluctuations.

Entanglement-Induced Barren Plateaus

Carlos Ortiz Marrero et al.

Summary: The article discusses how excess entanglement between visible and hidden units in quantum neural networks can hinder learning. Through arguments from quantum thermodynamics, it is shown that the volume law in entanglement entropy is typical and can lead to barren plateaus in the optimization landscape due to entanglement. This could cause both gradient-descent and gradient-free methods to fail.

Numerical simulation of quantum nonequilibrium phase transitions without finite-size effects

Edward Gillman et al.

Summary: Classical (1+1)-dimensional cellular automata are ideal for studying nonequilibrium phenomena due to their discrete time evolution and absence of time-discretization errors, allowing for accurate simulations of nonequilibrium phase transitions. Similarly, in the quantum regime, studying many-body critical dynamics using a one-dimensional, nonunitary quantum cellular automaton can lead to precise estimates of universal exponents, showcasing the potential of this approach in quantum systems.

Absorbing phase transition with a continuously varying exponent in a quantum contact process: A neural network approach

Minjae Jo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crossover behavior from quantum to classical absorbing phase transition in the quantum contact process. It is found that in one dimension, the critical exponent varies depending on the initial configuration, while in two dimensions classical behavior prevails. Neural network machine learning and numerical simulations are used to determine critical exponents, and the continuously varying exponent behavior is noted to be similar to that in the contact process with long-range interactions.
