Summertime Marine Boundary Layer Cloud, Thermodynamic, and Drizzle Morphology over the Eastern North Atlantic: A Four-Year Study

Qiuxuan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study combines various data sources to quantitatively analyze marine boundary layer clouds, thermodynamics, and drizzle morphology in the Eastern North Atlantic region. The study identifies different MBL structural regimes and shows that weather conditions, wind speed, and cloud type have significant impacts on cloud morphology and properties.

Turbulence in the Marine Boundary Layer and Air Motions below Stratocumulus Clouds at the ARM Eastern North Atlantic Site

Virendra P. Ghate et al.

Summary: Marine stratocumulus clouds are closely related to turbulence in the boundary layer, and drizzle is commonly seen within them. Data from the ARM's ENA site over a six-year period showed that variance of vertical velocity in the marine boundary layer is influenced by wind direction, season, and cloud cover. Moreover, vertical velocity and cloud fraction display a distinct diurnal cycle, with higher values at night compared to daytime.

Contrasting characteristics of open- and closed-cellular stratocumulus cloud in the eastern North Atlantic

Michael P. Jensen et al.

Summary: The study examined the differences between open and closed-cellular organization of marine boundary layer clouds using long-term observational data. It found that open-cell cases were associated with stronger cold-air advection and large-scale subsidence, deeper boundary layers, stronger low-level winds, and higher rain rates compared to closed-cell cases. The research provides insights into the environmental and cloud characteristics of varying marine boundary layer cloud mesoscale organization, which will be useful for evaluating model simulations.
