Factors Associated with Appropriate Gestational Weight Gain among Women with Obesity

Summary: This study compared differences in attendance of nutritional counseling, dietary composition, exercise patterns, and socioeconomic factors among obese women with inappropriate gestational weight gain (iGWG) versus appropriate GWG (aGWG). The results showed that physician reinforcement of counseling, greater activity level, and employment were associated with aGWG.

Summary: Gestational weight gain has different effects on delivery outcomes based on early-pregnancy BMI. Above average weight gain increases risks of caesarean delivery, induction of labor, and postpartum hemorrhage in normal and overweight women, while it only increases risks of caesarean delivery and induction of labor in obese women. Below average weight gain decreases the risk of caesarean delivery in all BMI groups except underweight women.

Physical activity before and during pregnancy: A cohort study

Summary: The study aimed to estimate physical activity in healthy women before and during pregnancy and evaluate the factors associated with moderate physical activity (MPA). Results showed that MPA decreased at the beginning of pregnancy, but compliance remained over 50%, with associations found between MPA and diet, pre-pregnancy physical activity, and obesity.

Gestational weight gain and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: A latent class trajectory analysis using birth cohort data

Summary: This study investigated trajectories of gestational weight gain before diagnosis and its association with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk. Two trajectories of weight gain were identified, with women showing excessive weight gain having a significantly increased risk of developing GDM. Excessive weight gain also led to higher risks of macrosomia and cesarean delivery.

Patterns and predictors of gestational weight gain in Addis Ababa, Central Ethiopia: a prospective cohort study

Summary: The study conducted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia aimed to assess the patterns and predictors of gestational weight gain among pregnant women. Findings showed that most pregnant women in the area gained inadequate weight during pregnancy, especially among underweight women. Being underweight, normal weight, or unemployed were associated with higher odds of inadequate weight gain during pregnancy. Promoting adequate weight gain during pregnancy for underweight and normal weight women in Addis Ababa is important for public health initiatives.

Summary: China has experienced significant social, economic, and lifestyle changes since the 1990s, leading to a rise in obesity rates. Despite efforts to tackle obesity, the country still faces challenges in controlling the epidemic and the associated burden on the healthcare system. The Healthy China 2030 national strategy provides an opportunity for China to establish comprehensive national strategies for addressing obesity, but strong commitment and leadership from central and local governments, as well as active participation from all sectors of society, are needed.

More studies on the association between physical activity and pregnancy are necessary due to the vulnerability of the studied populations.
