Synthesis of endohedral fullerenes by molecular surgery

Sally Bloodworth et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the organic chemistry principles behind the method of 'molecular surgery' and describes the techniques for opening and closing fullerene cages. Molecular surgery allows for encapsulation of atoms or small molecules in fullerenes, providing a unique opportunity for studying confined species. The achievements of molecular surgery in synthesizing closed fullerenes with encapsulated species are discussed.

Experimental determination of the interaction potential between a helium atom and the interior surface of a C60 fullerene molecule

George Razvan Bacanu et al.

Summary: This study utilizes terahertz spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering to determine the potential energy function for the nonbonded interaction between helium atoms and C-60 fullerene cages. The experimentally derived potential is compared to estimates from quantum chemistry calculations and sums of empirical two-body potentials.

A Solid-State Intramolecular Wittig Reaction Enables Efficient Synthesis of Endofullerenes Including Ne@C60, 3He@C60, and HD@C60

Gabriela Hoffman et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a new method to encapsulate gases in fullerenes and trap molecules inside by raising the temperature to complete a reaction, converting the product into C-60 containing endohedral species. This method allows for the synthesis of He-4@C-60, H-2@C-60, and D-2@C-60 in large quantities, as well as the incorporation of expensive gases like HD and He-3 to prepare HD@C-60 and He-3@C-60 efficiently. Additionally, the method enables the synthesis of Ne@C-60 for the first time through molecular surgery, and its characterization using crystallography and C-13 NMR spectroscopy.
