Structure of the moire exciton captured by imaging its electron and hole

Ouri Karni et al.

Summary: Interlayer excitons, electron-hole pairs bound across atomically thin layered semiconductors, have attracted attention for quantum information applications. In this study, images of the time-resolved and momentum-resolved distribution of both particles were captured in a WSe2/MoS2 heterostructure, providing direct measurements of the interlayer exciton diameter and its localization. The results show that interlayer excitons can be highly localized within small moire unit cells.

Electric control of valley polarization in monolayer WSe2 using a van der Waals magnet

Jia-Xin Li et al.

Summary: This study presents a new method for electrically controlled valley polarization based on van der Waals heterostructures. By utilizing a ferromagnetic tunnelling contact of Fe3GeTe2/hexagonal boron nitride, spin-polarized holes can be effectively injected into monolayer WSe2, resulting in a population imbalance between the +/- K valleys. Under an external magnetic field, the helicity of electroluminescence flips its sign, consistent with the magnetic hysteresis loop of Fe3GeTe2.

Optical absorption of interlayer excitons in transition-metal dichalcogenide heterostructures

Elyse Barre et al.

Summary: Interlayer excitons, electron-hole pairs bound across two monolayer van der Waals semiconductors, offer promising electrical tunability and localizability. The dielectric response of interlayer excitons was directly measured using their static electric dipole moment, and an intrinsic radiative lifetime and transition characteristics were determined. This study identifies a momentum-indirect emission mechanism and emphasizes the importance of characterizing absorption for applications relying on light-matter interactions.

Charge Transfer Dynamics in MoSe2/hBN/WSe2 Heterostructures

Yoseob Yoon et al.

Summary: Ultrafast charge transfer processes provide a simple way to create interlayer excitons in directly contacted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) layers. More sophisticated TMD/hBN/TMD heterostructures enable control over interlayer exciton properties and the emergence of novel exciton phenomena. The study investigates the charge transfer dynamics in a heterostructure composed of MoSe2 and WSe2 monolayers with a 1 nm thick hBN spacer, observing slower hole transfer compared to TMD layers without a spacer, as well as strong competition between interlayer charge transfer and intralayer exciton-exciton annihilation processes at high excitation densities.

Emergent Moire Phonons Due to Zone Folding in WSe2-WS2 Van der Waals Heterostructures

Hsun-Jen Chuang et al.

Summary: The appearance of moire Raman modes from nearly aligned WSe2-WS2 van der Waals heterostructures in a certain frequency range indicates sensitivity to twist angle and strong Raman intensity modulation dependent on excitation energy and temperature. These modes exhibit identical frequencies for a given small twist angle and are a consequence of the large moire length scale resulting in zone-folded phonon modes that are Raman active.

Spatially Dependent Electronic Structures and Excitons in a Marginally Twisted Moire Superlattice of Spiral WS2

Jiangbo Peng et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates that spiral WS2 nanosheets are marginally twisted moire superlattices using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The periodic moire superlattices are found on the third and fourth layers, resulting in a localized flat band near the valence band maximum. The bandgap depends on atomic stacking configurations, providing a good explanation for split moire excitons observed through photoluminescence.

Raman scattering investigation of twisted WS2/MoS2 heterostructures: interlayer mechanical coupling versus charge transfer

Lishu Wu et al.

Summary: In twisted WS2/MoS2 heterostructures, the shifts and linewidths of E-2g(Gamma) and A(1g)(Gamma) phonon modes are found to be twist angle dependent, primarily due to spacing-related repulsion between sulfur atoms. Additionally, opposite shift behaviors and broadening of A(1g)(Gamma) modes caused by charge transfer are also observed in the twisted heterostructures. The understanding and controlling of interlayer interaction through the stacking orientation are crucial for the future design of optoelectronic devices based on 2D heterostructures.

Signatures of moire trions in WSe2/MoSe2 heterobilayers

Erfu Liu et al.

Summary: Moire superlattices formed by van der Waals materials can support a wide range of electronic phases including Mott insulators, superconductors, and generalized Wigner crystals. The coupling of moire trions to charge carriers in tungsten diselenide/molybdenum diselenide heterobilayers leads to the emergence of new excitonic crystals with distinct properties and behaviors, motivating further theoretical and experimental studies of higher-order electron correlation effects in moire superlattices.
