Adsorption of N-heterocyclic compounds from aqueous solutions by sulfonic acid-functionalized hypercrosslinked resins in batch experiments

Yue Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, sulfonic acid-functionalized resins with different sulfonation degrees were prepared and found to exhibit superior adsorption performance for N-heterocyclic compounds with characteristics such as easy protonation, high π-electron cloud density and strong hydrophobicity. The adsorption capacities of pyridine on the resins were pH-dependent, with the optimum pH increasing with the sulfonation degree. Additionally, high sulfonation degree was related to high intraparticle diffusion rate and different driving forces of adsorption, including electrostatic attraction, pi-pi conjugation, and hydrophobic interaction, influenced the adsorption capacity of the resins.

Simultaneous high-concentration pyridine removal and denitrification in an electricity assisted bio-photodegradation system

Hefei Shi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated enhanced degradation of high-concentration pyridine and simultaneous denitrification using an Electricity assisted bio-photodegradation system (EBPS). By suppressing the recombination of photoelectron-hole pairs and utilizing denitrification in the biocathode zone, the degradation process was significantly accelerated. Analysis of microbial communities and genes involved in pyridine metabolism, denitrification, and extracellular electron transfer highlighted the crucial role of photoelectrical stimulation in EBPS. This approach provided a sustainable way for simultaneous removal of pyridine and nitrogen in wastewater.

Nitrogen-containing carbon nano-onions-like and graphene-like materials derived from biomass and the adsorption and visible photocatalytic performance

Lijuan Han et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-containing carbon (NC) materials with different morphologies, including nano-onions-like structure, show high nitrogen content and good adsorption performance, with the nano-onions-like structure exhibiting better visible-light photocatalytic performance. The pyridinic N in the NC materials serves as active sites, while the hollow nano-onions structure helps inhibit desorption of phenol and enhance adsorption performance. In addition, the presence of O-center dot(2-) species and graphite N contribute to the photocatalytic degradation of phenol under visible-light irradiation.
