Development of deep learning algorithms to discriminate giant cell tumors of bone from adjacent normal tissues by confocal Raman spectroscopy

Carol P. Y. Lau et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is a non-destructive analysis technique that can provide detailed information about the chemical structure of tumors. This study discovered characteristic Raman shifts in giant cell tumors of bone (GCTB), which can be used to distinguish them from adjacent normal tissues. Machine learning and deep learning algorithms were applied to classify GCTB and normal tissues, with the accuracy ranging from 82.8% to 94.5%. The LSTM algorithm showed the best performance in discriminating frozen specimens, with a sensitivity and specificity of 93.9% and 95.1% respectively, and an AUC of 0.97.

Simultaneous Raman and infrared spectroscopy: a novel combination for studying bacterial infections at the single cell level

Cassio Lima et al.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that causes approximately 11 million deaths worldwide. Raman and infrared spectroscopy, as diagnostic tools, have the potential to rapidly detect bacterial infections. This study introduces a new technology that combines infrared and Raman spectra, and demonstrates its similarity and reproducibility in analyzing bacterial samples. The findings show different clustering patterns between the two methods, highlighting the complementary information provided by microbial pigments in Raman spectra. Overall, the combination of Raman and infrared spectroscopy has promising applications in clinical microbiology.

Analysis of Fixed and Live Single Cells Using Optical Photothermal Infrared with Concomitant Raman Spectroscopy

Alice Spadea et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the first use of a novel completely optically-based photothermal method to obtain infrared spectra of biological cells and to combine it with Raman spectra at submicron spatial resolution. The new instrumentation is capable of analyzing subcellular structures, identifying protein secondary structures, and lipid-rich bodies on the submicron scale, showing great potential in cell analysis.

A Machine Learning Approach Enables Quantitative Measurement of Liver Histology and Disease Monitoring in NASH

Amaro Taylor-Weiner et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using machine learning can accurately assess liver histopathology in NASH patients and sensitively quantify treatment response. Deep learning methods not only show strong correlations with expert pathologists' evaluations, but also have good predictive value for disease progression in NASH.
