Bioelectrochemical partial-denitrification coupled with anammox for autotrophic nitrogen removal

Yue Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents a new method for denitrification by coupling autotrophic bioelectrochemical partial-denitrification with anammox. It was demonstrated that nitrite can be stably accumulated and the transformation ratio from nitrate to nitrite can be improved by a small bias voltage. The nitrite and ammonium can be effectively removed through anammox. Additionally, the self-alkalization of the catholyte and the external voltage were found to be important for achieving partial-denitrification.

A review of process parameters influence in solid-state anaerobic digestion: Focus on performance stability thresholds

A. Ajayi-Banji et al.

Summary: Process parameters such as pH, ammonia, and volatile fatty acids are important indicators of stress level, reactor performance, and methane yield in solid-state anaerobic digestion (SSAD). This review examines SSAD literature from the past twenty-one years and identifies process parameter thresholds for SSAD. The review discusses the strengths and limitations of these parameters in optimizing SSAD performance. In summary, to minimize acid inhibition in the SSAD reactor, it is recommended to avoid VFA/Alk >1.5, maintain a pH within 7.5-8.3 to optimize methanogens activities, and avoid ammonia concentration >9.0 g/L which could disrupt archaea activities. Additionally, an initial C/N ratio between 10 and 29 is likely to avoid inhibition and ensure successful SSAD.
