Application of surfactants in enhancing oil recovery from tight carbonates: Physicochemical properties and core flooding experiments

Osama Massarweh et al.

Summary: This experimental study examines the performance of novel Alfoterra surfactants in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and compares it to other surfactants. The study optimized the surfactant formulations based on their critical micelle concentration and aqueous stability. It was found that the presence of the surfactants and increase in salinity reduced oil-water interfacial tension and altered rock wettability. Adsorption tests showed that anionic surfactants tend to adsorb more onto carbonates. Core flooding tests demonstrated an EOR of 25.7-39.4% above regular waterflooding.

Evaluation of Silicon Carbide Nanoparticles as an Additive to Minimize Surfactant Loss during Chemical Flooding

Anurag Pandey et al.

Summary: Surfactant flooding is an effective method for enhanced oil recovery, but the loss of surfactant due to adsorption and the critical micelle concentration pose challenges. This study demonstrates that the use of Silicon Carbide nanoparticles as additives can reduce surfactant adsorption by 44% and the critical micelle concentration by 14%. The concentration of nanoparticles required is significantly lower than previous literature on other nanoparticles.

Experimental Investigation of the Effect of Acid and Base on Wettability Alteration of a Calcite Surface

Sheiam Al-Araimi et al.

Summary: The study explores the effects of organic acid and base on the wettability of calcite surfaces, finding that an increase in acid concentration shifts the surface towards oil-wetness, while the base at low concentrations shifts the wettability from water-wet to slightly oil-wet. Acid-base mixtures showed an increase in wettability alteration towards oil-wetness with an increase in the base-to-acid ratio, lower interfacial tension, and the formation of acid-base complexes contributing to the synergistic effect.
