Nonlocal couple stress-based quasi-3D nonlinear dynamics of agglomerated CNT-reinforced micro/nano-plates before and after bifurcation phenomenon

Xiao-Guang Yue et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonlinear dynamic stability characteristics of axially compressed nanocomposite plates reinforced with randomly oriented carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at micro/nano-scale were investigated. The nonlocal couple stress (NCS) continuum elasticity was incorporated to a quasi-3D plate theory to consider the transverse shear and normal displacements. A two-parameter homogenization scheme was used to obtain the effective characters of the CNT-reinforced nanocomposites. The NCS-based nonlinear differential equations of motion were discretized using the Kronecker tensor product and the shifted Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobatto gridding pattern. The results showed that the significance of the softening and stiffening characters related to the nonlocal and couple stress tensors increased slightly before the bifurcation phenomenon, but decreased after the critical bifurcation point.

Vibration analysis of a cylindrical shell by using strain gradient theory via a moving Kriging interpolation-based meshfree method

Dongchang Hou et al.

Summary: The strain gradient theory is applied to investigate the vibration characteristics of a thin-walled cylindrical shell. An energy equation involving both in-plane displacements and out-plane deflections is constructed, and a meshfree discretization scheme is adopted. The study shows that the natural frequencies evaluated by strain gradient elasticity theory are lower than those of the classical model, indicating the significant influence of size effect on the vibration of the shell. Furthermore, the mesh-free moving Kriging interpolation method is found to have high precision and stability in dealing with strain gradient cylindrical shells.

Isogeometric nonlinear oscillations of nonlocal strain gradient PFGM micro/nano-plates via NURBS-based formulation

Fan Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the size-dependent analysis of the geometrically nonlinear vibration response of micro/nano-plates made of porous functionally graded material (PFGM) with and without a central cutout, considering nonlocality and strain gradient size dependencies. It is found that the increase in nonlinear frequency due to the strain gradient size effect is greater than the reduction caused by nonlocality. Additionally, there is a specific length to thickness ratio value at which the nonlocal strain gradient frequency ratio becomes minimum, and this value increases with the porosity index of PFGM micro/nano-plates.

Buckling and postbuckling response of nonlocal strain gradient porous functionally graded micro/nano-plates via NURBS-based isogeometric analysis

Fan Fan et al.

Summary: The study shows that considering geometric nonlinearity and moving to deeper part of the postbuckling regime reduces the significance of both nonlocality and strain gradient size dependencies. Additionally, increasing the material property gradient index results in an enhancement of nonlocal and strain gradient size effects, especially in the deeper part of the postbuckling domain. Moreover, the study demonstrates that the porosity index has a negligible influence on the significance of size dependencies for a PFGM micro/nano-plate, regardless of the boundary conditions.

Buckling analysis of nanoplates based on a generic third-order plate theory with shear-dependent non-isotropic surface stresses

L. H. Tong et al.

Summary: This paper employs a general third-order shear deformation plate theory to study the buckling behaviors of rectangular nanoplates, establishing a new model with non-isotropic surface effects and obtaining analytical solutions for critical buckling loads. The influence of various factors on the buckling behavior of nanoplates, such as plate thickness, length-to-thickness ratio, surface modulus, residual surface stress, is analyzed in detail using both Reddy's TSDPT and GTSDPT. The presence of shear stresses on the interface between surface layers and the bulk of the plates leads to differences in buckling results between TSDPT and GTSDPT, indicating the need for the latter theory.
