The Critical Role of Process Analysis in Chemical Recycling and Upcycling of Waste Plastics

Scott R. Nicholson et al.

Summary: There is a pressing need to develop new technologies for the circularity of synthetic polymers due to the accumulation of waste plastics and their impact on climate change. Chemical recycling offers a promising solution by converting waste plastics into molecular intermediates for remanufacturing. This paper defines classes of chemical recycling and upcycling and presents general process concepts for the recycling of mixed plastics waste. A framework for techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment is also provided to evaluate the effectiveness of different recycling approaches.

Quantification and evaluation of plastic waste in the United States

Anelia Milbrandt et al.

Summary: Spatially explicit data on plastic waste management in the United States were analyzed using statistical and geospatial methods. The study revealed that in 2019, 86% of the 44 Mt of plastic waste generated was landfilled, 9% was combusted, and 5% was recycled. The landfilled plastics resulted in significant economic losses and had a substantial impact on energy consumption. The researchers suggest that advanced sorting and recycling processes could recover a significant amount of landfilled plastic waste.

Production of gasoline from municipal solid waste via steam gasification, methanol synthesis, and Methanol-to-Gasoline technologies: A techno-economic assessment

Hamad AlMohamadi

Summary: A techno-economic analysis was conducted on the process of producing gasoline from municipal solid waste via steam gasification using dolomite catalysts, followed by methanol synthesis and conversion to gasoline. The study estimated a total capital investment of $148 million, an annual operational cost of $56 million, and determined the minimum selling price of gasoline at $2.40/gallon for a 20-year project life. Sensitivity analysis showed that feedstock costs, plant disposal fees, gasoline yield, and ash content in MSW were crucial factors affecting the minimum selling price of gasoline.
