A Study of CexFe1-xO2 as a Reducible Oxide for the Thermal Hydrogen Production from Water

Salem Al-Taweel et al.

Summary: Thermal water splitting over 1550 degrees C-reduced CeO2 and Ce(0.95)5Fe(0.05)O (2-delta) shows higher hydrogen production and faster reaction kinetics for Ce0.95Fe0.05O2-delta compared to CeO2. Despite homogenously distributed Fe cations in the crystals, Fe segregation to the edges of the crystals is observed after reaction, indicating a different reactivity.

Can two CO2 molecules be simultaneously bound to one Na+ site in NaY zeolite? A detailed FTIR investigation

Kristina Chakarova et al.

Summary: Efficient CO2 capture is crucial for addressing current environmental issues. Porous materials, such as zeolites, show promise in this regard, but adsorption capacity remains a key concern. This study investigates CO2 adsorption on NaY zeolite using FTIR spectroscopy and reveals the formation of Na+ center dot center dot center dot O-C-O species at ambient temperature. The study also demonstrates the potential for simultaneous binding of two CO2 molecules to one cationic site, suggesting new possibilities for the design of high-capacity CO2 adsorbents.

Raman spectroscopy as a powerful tool to characterize ceria-based catalysts

Stephane Loridant

Summary: This paper reviews the various opportunities offered by Raman spectroscopy for advanced characterization of ceria-based catalysts, including spectral modifications induced by nanocrystallinity, defects, doping, reduction, identification of supported molecular species, isolated atoms, nanoclusters, surface modes, hydroxyl groups, and reaction intermediates. In situ/operando studies for environmental catalysis are also summarized, highlighting Raman spectroscopy as a powerful tool for characterizing ceria-based catalysts.

On the wrong assignment of the XPS O1s signal at 531-532 eV attributed to oxygen vacancies in photo- and electro-catalysts for water splitting and other materials applications

Hicham Idriss

Summary: The XPS O1s signal mistakenly attributed to oxygen vacancies is actually due to the adsorption of water molecules on the oxide surface under ambient conditions. Surface oxygen vacancies in binary or mixed metal oxide materials or catalysts will be oxidized instantly due to the strong adsorption energy of water, making it impossible for ex-situ measurements.

CO2 Adsorption on Modified Mesoporous Silicas: The Role of the Adsorption Sites

Martin Ravutsov et al.

Summary: The post-synthesis procedure for cyclic amine modified mesoporous silicas was developed, resulting in materials with high CO2 absorption capacity, with 1-methylpiperazine modified MCM-48 showing outstanding performance. The modification did not strongly affect the structural characteristics of the initial mesoporous silicas. These materials are reusable, with slightly lower CO2 adsorption capacities after three adsorption/desorption cycles.
