Sustainable ligand-modified based composite material for the selective and effective cadmium(II) capturing from wastewater

Md. Munjur Hasan et al.

Summary: The chemical ligand BSBAE was embedded indirectly on mesoporous silica to fabricate optical composite materials (OCM) for detecting and removing toxic cadmium (Cd(II)) ions from wastewater solutions. The OCM demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity towards Cd(II) ions in acidic pH conditions (pH 3.50) and showed distinguishable color changes upon the addition of trace levels of Cd(II) ions. Other metal ions did not significantly affect the performance of the OCM, which had a detection limit of 0.32 μg/L and a maximum adsorption capacity of 179.65 mg/g for Cd(II) ions. Cd(II) ions could be successfully desorbed from the saturated OCM using 0.25 M HCl, and the regenerated OCM maintained its selectivity and adsorption capacity. However, the adsorption efficiency slightly decreased after multiple cycles. Therefore, the OCM offers a cost-effective and viable alternative for detecting and removing toxic Cd(II) ions from wastewater.

Zeolite Adsorbents for Selective Removal of Co(II) and Li(I) from Aqueous Solutions

Eduardo Diez et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to selectively remove cobalt and lithium from aqueous solutions using two commercial FAU zeolites as adsorbent materials. The solids were characterized to understand their structure integrity, Si/Al ratio, and specific surface area. The kinetic study showed that 100% cobalt removal is achievable while lithium removal is around 30%. The selectivity is important as these two metals often appear together in leaching solutions like ion-Li batteries. Cobalt adsorption follows Langmuir model, while lithium adsorption is better represented by Freundlich model.

Enhanced remediation of phenanthrene in water and soil by novel biochar-immobilized bacterial microspheres

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: Bioaugmentation is a promising technology for removing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, but high-efficiency microbial agents are limited. This study developed iron-modified biochar materials with green solvent polyethylene glycol 200 and Fe(NO3)3·9H2O through one-step pyrolysis. The modified biochar showed high microbial immobilization efficiency and improved surface structure. By coupling the effective adsorption of green materials with the biodegradability of microorganisms, the iron-modified biochar microorganism spheres exhibited efficient removal of phenanthrene from aqueous solution and soil.

Assessing sustainable Lutetium(III) ions adsorption and recovery using novel composite hybrid nanomaterials

Md Nazmul Hasan et al.

Summary: Organic ligand-based sustainable composite hybrid material (CMHs) was synthesized for the sensitive and selective adsorption of Lu(III) from waste samples. The adsorption of Lu(III) was influenced by solution pH, with slightly acidic conditions chosen for optimal separation and adsorption. Other metal ions did not interfere with Lu(III) adsorption due to the high affinity of Lu(III) to CMHs. The CMHs exhibited a high adsorption capacity and the adsorbed Lu(III) ions were easily eluted for regeneration.

Simultaneous removal of anionic and cationic dyes from wastewater with biosorbents from banana peels

Anastasia Stavrinou et al.

Summary: Untreated banana peel can efficiently adsorb cationic dyes but weakly adsorb anionic dyes. Conversion of banana peel into activated carbon through thermochemical treatment enhances the sorption capacity for both types of dyes. Among the tested activated carbons, the highest sorption capacity for both dyes was achieved when banana peel was modified with NaOH and pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C (BPAC-NaOH-700).

Adsorption characteristic analysis of PAHs on activated carbon with different functional groups by molecular simulation

Junying Wang et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as widespread organic pollutants, pose significant threats to human health. Adsorption technology, with its low cost, simple design, and absence of secondary pollution, has become a main method for PAHs treatment. Solid media, particularly activated carbon, exhibit strong adsorption capacities for PAHs. In this study, the adsorption behavior of three PAHs (naphthalene, anthracene, and phenanthrene) on activated carbon was explored at the molecular level using the Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method. The effect of different functional groups and temperature on the adsorption isotherms and heat of adsorption of PAHs on activated carbon was evaluated. Results revealed that the carbonyl functional group had the most significant influence on PAH adsorption, while acid functional groups were more favorable than alkali functional groups. Moreover, the adsorption capacity and heat of adsorption decreased with increasing temperature, and the adsorption performance of bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was more affected by temperature than that of tricyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Plasma microbubbles vs gas-liquid DBD energized by low-frequency high voltage nanopulses for pollutants degradation in water: Destruction mechanisms, composition of plasma-activated water and energy assessment

S. Meropoulis et al.

Summary: The study compared gas-liquid DBD and plasma microbubbles (PMB) in terms of pollutant destruction mechanisms, plasma-activated water composition, and cost-effectiveness. Gas-liquid DBD showed higher concentrations of long-lived species and a significant decrease in solution pH, while PMB had lower concentrations of long-lived species and near-neutral pH. PMB demonstrated advantages such as higher .OH concentrations, faster degradation kinetics, and lower energy requirements compared to gas-liquid DBD. The study provides insights for the further development of plasma-based wastewater treatment.
