Population, Ecological Footprint and the Sustainable Development Goals

Partha Dasgupta et al.

Summary: The Anthropocene refers to an era where human demand for the Earth's resources exceeds its sustainable supply, leading to a decline in the biosphere and increasing inequality. This study uses ecological gap, global GDP, and natural capital depletion to address three questions: (1) the required efficiency increase in converting Nature's services into GDP for sustainable development by 2030; (2) the sustainable world population for maintaining a high global living standard; (3) the attainable living standard with a world population projected to reach 9 billion by 2100 according to the UN. While the study takes a global perspective, the reasoning can also be applied at a smaller scale. The base year for calculations is 2019, before the pandemic.

Is reducing fossil fuel intensity important for environmental management and ensuring ecological efficiency in China?

Ugur Korkut Pata et al.

Summary: As China faces severe environmental pollution, researchers have conducted in-depth studies on China's environmental problems using various environmental indicators such as carbon emissions and ecological footprints. Unlike previous studies, this research analyzes the impact of economic growth, globalization, foreign direct investment, and fossil energy intensity on ecological efficiency in China. The results show that globalization and economic growth contribute to improving ecological efficiency, while foreign direct investment and fossil fuel intensity exert a negative impact on China's environmental quality. Based on these findings, the study suggests that the Chinese government should implement policies to direct foreign direct investment towards environmentally friendly production, reduce fossil fuel intensity, and improve ecological efficiency through the utilization of environmentally friendly technologies provided by globalization and economic development.

A consideration of the environmental externality of Turkey's integration into global value chains: evidence from dynamic ARDL simulation model

Godwin Olasehinde-Williams et al.

Summary: Turkey's increased participation in global value chains has contributed to its phenomenal growth, but has also posed unique environmental challenges. This study examines the environmental effects of Turkey's participation in global value chains and finds that it has a positive long-term impact on carbon emissions. The study also suggests that both backward and forward linkages into global value chains contribute similarly to pollution. These findings highlight the importance of implementing environmental policies in Turkey's global value chain participation.
