Rational Computational Design of Systems Exhibiting Strong Halogen Bonding Involving Fluorine in Bicyclic Diamine Derivatives

Stefan Andrew Harry et al.

Summary: The potential of fluorine in compounds to serve as a halogen bond donor is a controversial and rare aspect of halogen bonding interaction. This note presents clear and convincing examples of hypothetical molecules where fluorine forms strong halogen bonding in a metastable state. Of particular interest is a polycyclic system inspired by Selectfluor, which has been controversially proposed as being involved in halogen bonding.

Chalcogen-Bond Catalysis: Telluronium-Catalyzed [4+2]- Cyclocondensation of (in situ Generated) Aryl Imines with Alkenes

Loic Groslambert et al.

Summary: Tellurium species in the chalcogen series exhibit strong chalcogen bonding (ChB) interaction with electron-rich atoms, which has sparked renewed interest in tellurium-based derivatives for various applications. In this study, the catalytic activity of telluronium salts in the Povarov reaction is presented. Different dienophiles and imines efficiently react in the presence of diarylmethyltelluronium or triaryltelluronium salts as catalysts, and these catalysts can also perform the three-component Povarov reaction. The reactivity of telluroniums towards imines and aldehydes was confirmed through solid state and solution-state spectroscopy.

Summary: The design of appropriate XB chiral donor molecules is the first step towards the development of asymmetric catalysis based on halogen bond (XB). This study reports the synthesis of iodinated compounds with planar chirality and attests their XB donor property using X-ray diffraction analysis. These compounds demonstrate good catalytic properties in the aza-Diels-Alder reaction.

Hydrogen Bonds with Fluorine in Ligand-Protein Complexes-the PDB Analysis and Energy Calculations

Wojciech Pietrus et al.

Summary: This study presents a statistical analysis of fluorine-containing hydrogen bonds in medicinal chemistry. The results indicate that the interaction energy of F-containing HBs is determined by the donor-acceptor distance, and fluorine is a weak HB acceptor for all types of HB donors. In addition, the calculated energetic optima do not match the most commonly observed geometric parameters of HBs.

Chalcogen bonding in coordination chemistry

Kamran T. Mahmudov et al.

Summary: Chalcogen bond (ChB) is a relevant supramolecular tool in designing the secondary coordination sphere of metal complexes, contributing to the improvement of functional properties of materials. It is a noncovalent interaction between the electron density deficient region of a chalcogen atom and a nucleophilic site in the same or another molecular entity.

Summary: Sigma-hole interactions, such as halogen bonding and chalcogen bonding, have wide-ranging applications in supramolecular chemistry, particularly in sensor design. This article provides a detailed overview of developments in XB and ChB mediated sensing, including optical and electrochemical sensors, and discusses the potential for future fundamental developments in the field. The concepts and methodologies described in this review are generically applicable for the development of supramolecular receptors and sensors, making it a useful guide for the chemistry community.

Summary: 2'-Fluoro-substituted acetophenone derivatives preferentially adopt s-trans conformations in solution, with coupling constants linearly correlated to the dielectric constant of the solvents. The confirmation of these s-trans conformations by X-ray crystallography and DFT calculations further support this preference.

Insight into the Modes of Activation of Pyridinium and Bipyridinium Salts in Non-Covalent Organocatalysis

Robin Weiss et al.

Summary: A series of pyridinium and bipyridinium salts were prepared and evaluated for their catalytic properties in the aza-Diels-Alder reaction between imines and Danishefsky diene. The study demonstrated two mechanisms of activation depending on the substituents of the pyridinium/bipyridinium rings and the nature of the counterion. Activation through charge transfer or halogen bond involving the imine nitrogen lone pair were identified as the main mechanisms of catalytic action.

Probing Halogen Bonds by Scalar Couplings

Bono Jimmink et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that scalar coupling constants are modulated by halogen bonding, with the magnitude change of one-bond couplings correlating to the interaction strength. The findings, based on NMR data and quantum chemical calculations of 42 halogen-bonded complexes in dichloromethane solution, suggest that scalar couplings can be used as a method for characterizing halogen bond complexes in solution and potentially for other types of weak sigma-hole interactions.
