MP-PIC simulation on CO2 gasification of biomass in a pilot plant circulating fluidized bed gasifier

Xiaoli Zhu et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the gasification of biomass with CO2 in a pilot plant circulating fluidized bed gasifier. The results showed that the CO2 percentage in the gasifying agent had insignificant influence on gas-solid distribution, but directly affected the char conversion and product gas compositions. The optimal CO2 percentage was found to be 60 wt%, resulting in the best thermochemical performance of the gasifier.

Coarse-grained CFD-DEM simulation of coal and biomass co-gasification process in a fluidized bed reactor: Effects of particle size distribution and operating pressure

Shaohua Du et al.

Summary: This study investigates the co-gasification process of coal and biomass in a bubbling fluidized bed gasifier using a coarse-grained computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) simulation. The effects of particle size distribution and operating pressure on hydrodynamics, heat transfer, and co-gasification performance are analyzed. The results show that the increase in sand particle size distribution (PSD) width has a slight impact on particle concentration distribution, particle residence time distribution, and co-gasification performance. The convective heat transfer rate is significantly higher than that of conduction and radiation. An increase in PSD width leads to the formation of a vertical solid temperature gradient at the bottom of the bed due to deteriorated solid mixing. Higher operating pressure results in a decrease in bed temperature, and the variation in convective heat transfer rate dominates the heat transfer efficiency. Elevated operating pressure promotes the thermal-chemical conversion of blend fuel by accelerating the char conversion reaction.

Numerical simulation of biomass gasification in fluidized bed gasifiers

Miao Yang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates biomass gasification in lab-scale fluidized bed gasifiers using the MP-PIC model coupled with the DKM and a new pyrolysis model. The results show that the DKM improves the robustness of the model and the new pyrolysis model enhances the sensitivity of gasification product yields to operating temperature. The simulation results agree well with experimental data and reveal the effects of steam/biomass ratio and operating temperature on gas product formation. The steam/biomass ratio has a minor effect on pyrolysis and heterogeneous reactions, while the gasifier temperature has a crucial impact on these processes and carbon conversion.

Effect of size and spacing on the wake characteristics of two spheres placed in tandem

Abhishek Kumar et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the flow past two spheres placed in a tandem arrangement using OpenFOAM at a fixed Reynolds number of 300. The diameters of the spheres are varied to determine the effects on the wake behavior, with a particular focus on the transition from steady to unsteady flow. It is found that the wake behavior is influenced by the diameter ratio and spacing between the spheres, and the drag force on the spheres increases with larger spacing.

Summary: This study introduces new models for mass transfer to spheres under three different conditions: mass transfer without Stefan flow, mass transfer with even Stefan flow, and mass transfer with uneven flux driven Stefan flow. The new models, derived from high resolved computational fluid dynamic simulations, show improved accuracy and reduced relative error, especially for higher Sc numbers.

Effect of Stefan flow on the drag force of single reactive particle surrounded by a sea of inert particles

Shaohua Du et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the combinational effect of Stefan flow, particle Reynolds number, and solid holdup on the drag force of a single reactive particle in the thermo-chemical conversion process of solid fuels inside fluidized bed reactors. The direction of Stefan flow affects the drag force, and the effect of Stefan flow weakens as the solid holdup or particle Reynolds number increases.

The influence of Stefan flow on the flow and heat-transfer characteristics of spherical-particle pair in supercritical water

Yingdong Wang et al.

Summary: For mixtures with dispersed reactive particles, especially highly concentrated particles, the interactions between particles and between particles and fluid are complex and have significant effects on the overall flow. This study focuses on the flow and fluid-particle heat transfer characteristics of supercritical water flowing around a fixed two-particle system. The effects of different particle configurations and the influence of Stefan flow are analyzed. The results show that the configurations of two particles have significant impacts on the drag coefficient, Nusselt number, and vortex structure, and the wake vortex structure is strongly affected by Stefan flow, which reduces the drag coefficient and Nusselt number.

Simulation of biomass-plastic co-gasification in a fluidized bed reactor using Aspen plus

Maninderjit Singh et al.

Summary: A detailed process model for co-gasification of biomass and plastics in a fluidized bed reactor was developed using Aspen Plus software. The effects of process parameters such as plastic content and reactor temperature on the composition and properties of syngas were investigated. The results showed that increasing the plastic content led to higher hydrogen concentrations in the syngas, and increasing the gasification temperature resulted in increased hydrogen content and higher heating value of the syngas.

T. J. J. M. van Overveld et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamics of spherical particles in oscillating flows. It is found that the dynamics of particle pairs in oscillating channel flows are fundamentally different from those in oscillating boxes due to the presence of a Stokes boundary layer. The results show that the oscillating channel flow and the oscillating box are only equivalent in a limited region of the parameter space.

Effect of Stefan flow on the drag force in flow past random arrays of spheres

Summary: Stefan flow, induced by reactions or component diffusion inside particles, affects mass transfer between gas and solid phases significantly.
