Response of vegetation to multi-timescales drought in the Qinling Mountains of China

Guizeng Qi et al.

Summary: Understanding how vegetation responds to drought is crucial for ecosystem and water resource management. This study investigated the spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation responses to drought in the Qinling Mountains. The results showed a significant positive correlation between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The most sensitive period for vegetation growth in response to drought was from May to July. Additionally, the response timescale of vegetation to drought was found to differ between the northern and southern slopes. The study also highlighted the importance of considering vegetation type and elevation in drought management.

Evaluation of consistency among three NDVI products applied to High Mountain Asia in 2000-2015

Yongchang Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the consistency among three NDVI datasets (GIMMS, MODIS, and SPOT) in characterizing alpine vegetation dynamics in High Mountain Asia from 2001 to 2015. The results show different trends in vegetation variability at different spatial-temporal scales and elevation. The study also compares the spatial trends and distribution patterns of the datasets, and explores their utility using NDVI quality control and Landsat NDVI.

Widespread increasing vegetation sensitivity to soil moisture

Wantong Li et al.

Summary: Vegetation sensitivity to soil moisture has been increasing in (semi)arid areas, but state-of-the-art land surface models fail to capture this trend. Decreased soil moisture availability and declining precipitation have led to global vegetation vulnerability and reduced carbon uptake.

Increasing sensitivity of dryland vegetation greenness to precipitation due to rising atmospheric CO2

Yao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examines the changes in the sensitivity of vegetation to precipitation over the past four decades using satellite observations and statistical learning approach. The results show increased precipitation sensitivity in drylands and decreased sensitivity in wet regions. Model simulations suggest that elevated CO2 is the main contributing factor to these contrasting trends.

Liqin Yang et al.

Summary: This study utilized MEEMD and BEAST algorithms to diagnose vegetation trends in the Hexi Corridor from 1982 to 2015, addressing the spatiotemporal nonlinearity and nonstationarity of climatic drivers using GTWR. The results revealed a clear greening trend in vegetation in the Hexi Corridor.

Seasonal biological carryover dominates northern vegetation growth

Xu Lian et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the carryover effect of vegetation growth has strong positive impacts on seasonal vegetation growth in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly in early growing-season vegetation growth, surpassing the influence of past and co-occurring climate factors. This carryover effect persists into the subsequent year but does not extend further, significantly contributing to the observed annual greening trend.

Recent leveling off of vegetation greenness and primary production reveals the increasing soil water limitations on the greening Earth

Xiaoming Feng et al.

Summary: Global vegetation photosynthesis and productivity have significantly increased since the 1980s, but by 2016, the growth began to level off with some areas showing browning. This was mainly due to increasing soil water limitations caused by drought expansion, indicating that the impacts of water stress may offset the benefits of global vegetation greening.

Observed increasing water constraint on vegetation growth over the last three decades

Wenzhe Jiao et al.

Summary: Jiao et al. conducted a comprehensive evaluation of changes in water constraint on vegetation growth in the extratropical Northern Hemisphere between 1982 and 2015. They found a significant increase in vegetation water constraint, with vegetation water deficit areas expanding and water surplus areas shrinking.
