Post mortem computed tomography meets radiomics: a case series on fractal analysis of post mortem changes in the brain

Summary: In this study, CT imaging was used to evaluate anatomical changes in the brain of corpses within 0-4 days after death. Fractal analysis of CT brain slices provided quantitative descriptors that can map post-mortem changes over time in the entire brain. While these descriptors cannot directly estimate the post-mortem interval, they can be combined with other methods to improve the accuracy and reliability of estimating the time since death.

Summary: By comparing postmortem brains to fresh human neocortex, researchers observed that fresh brain samples had a unique transcriptional pattern with a rapid decrease in neuronal activity-dependent transcripts and an increase in glial gene expression. These dynamic transcriptional and cellular changes during the postmortem interval are crucial for interpreting research on human brain disorders.
