Impacts of the COVID-19 epidemic on carbon emissions from international shipping

Lang Xu et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 epidemic has had an unprecedented impact on the shipping industry due to strict lockdown measures taken by most countries, but these measures have also played a significant role in controlling carbon emissions from international shipping. This study uses threshold generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity and exponential generalized autoregressive heteroscedasticity to investigate the asymmetry of fluctuations in carbon emissions from international shipping caused by control variables. The GARCH-MIDAS model is introduced to examine whether newly confirmed cases are independent of control variables and have an impact on carbon emissions fluctuations. The results show that the information contained in newly confirmed cases cannot be captured by adding other control variables. Additionally, newly confirmed cases have a negative impact on the volatility of carbon emissions, while other control variables significantly increase carbon emissions. This study provides a quantitative research method for analyzing the volatility and impact factors of international shipping carbon emissions, which can contribute to the formulation of more reasonable emission reduction measures and promote the low-carbon transformation of the global shipping industry.

Emissions assessment of bulk carriers in China's east Coast-Yangtze River maritime network based on different shipping modes

Jun Ye et al.

Summary: This paper compares the differences in ship emissions among river-sea combined mode, river-sea mode, and mixed mode. The results show that river-sea mode and mixed mode produce less emissions compared to the traditional river-sea combined mode. Additionally, shorter transshipment times, proper ports, and cleaner fuels can significantly reduce ship emissions.

Towards a probabilistic approach for risk analysis of nuclear-powered icebreakers using FMEA and FRAM

Shanshan Fu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a probabilistic risk analysis method for nuclear-powered icebreakers in independent, escort, and convoy operations in ice-covered waters. The method incorporates failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and functional resonance analysis method (FRAM) to analyze failure modes and accident scenarios. Targeted risk control options are proposed based on the critical accident scenarios and their associated functions and coupling changes.

The coupling effect between economic development and the urban ecological environment in Shanghai port

Jihong Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposes a system to evaluate the coordination between port industry chain development and the urban ecological environment using Shanghai Port as an example. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method and the Coupling Coordination Degree Model (CCDM) were applied to analyze the relationship between port industry development and the urban ecological environment. The research finds that the coupling coordination degree between Shanghai Port's economic development and the urban ecological environment is overall improving, but there is still room for improvement.

Evolutionary game of inland shipping pollution control under government co-supervision

Lang Xu et al.

Summary: This study discusses the evolutionary stable strategies in the context of environmental governance in inland shipping, and how to promote the development of the electric ship industry and the benign development of the inland river environmental governance system. The results show that the improvement of the initial probability and risk preference of the upstream and downstream governments and shipping companies is crucial.

Projections of shipping emissions and the related impact on air pollution and human health in the Nordic region

Camilla Geels et al.

Summary: International initiatives have successfully reduced emissions from shipping in Emission Control Areas, but concerns remain about potential counteractions from increased shipping in the future. This study aims to provide updated insights on future ship emissions and their impact on air quality in the Nordic and Arctic areas, through detailed scenario planning and modeling. The projections suggest a decrease in premature deaths related to air pollution, including from shipping emissions, by 2050 with proper regulations and measures in place.

Real-Time Simulation of Ship-Ice Collision Based on Physical Property

Yuhao Sun et al.

Summary: Sea ice model is unique in navigation simulators as it does not change structure. The analysis of ship-ice collision and modeling methods of sea ice, incorporating numerical calculations and modularization to the sea ice calculation model, showed promising results for visualization in ice navigation scenes. The use of semi-infinite plane elastic foundation theory and wedge-shaped beam structures proved to be effective in simulating and verifying the ship-ice collision process.
