Exploring soluble and colloidally transported trace elements in stalagmites: The strontium-yttrium connection

J. T. Sliwinski et al.

Summary: Fluorescent laminations in stalagmites from Asturias, Spain are annual and coincide with peaks in yttrium and troughs in strontium concentrations, which are reliable seasonality markers. Strontium concentrations are positively correlated with stalagmite growth rate and controlled by solution supersaturation, influenced by seasonal variations in cave ventilation. Yttrium concentrations are controlled by drip water flux, surface retention time, and dilation within the matrix. The persistent anti-correlation between strontium and yttrium can be explained as an interplay between their individual controls.

Ubiquitous karst hydrological control on speleothem oxygen isotope variability in a global study

Pauline C. Treble et al.

Summary: Karst hydrology has a significant impact on the oxygen isotopic compositions of cave speleothems, and global analysis suggests that inconsistencies in speleothem-based reconstructions of past hydroclimates are common worldwide. The influence of fractures on flowpaths is identified as the primary driver of within-cave speleothem and dripwater oxygen isotopic variability.

Combined fluorescence imaging and LA-ICP-MS trace element mapping of stalagmites: Microfabric identification and interpretation

J. T. Sliwinski et al.

Summary: By analyzing stalagmites from Asturias, Spain using laser ablation inductively-coupled-plasma mass spectrometry and confocal laser scanning microscopy, seasonal banding and variations in trace elements and fluorescence were observed. Lateral fluorescence variations in saw-tooth patterns indicate disruptions in seasonal banding, which are corroborated by trace element differences such as Mg and Na. The findings suggest that caution should be taken when obtaining trace element information without prior reconnaissance mapping. Traditional drilling may homogenize lateral variations and provide more reliable trace element estimates.

Quantifying temporal variability and spatial heterogeneity in rainfall recharge thresholds in a montane karst environment

Andy Baker et al.

Summary: Quantifying rainfall recharge thresholds, including their spatial and temporal heterogeneity, is essential for understanding recharge processes and improving estimation of recharge rates. Monitoring nine infiltration sites in a cave over six years revealed varied responses to rainfall events, with high correlations between annual percolation water volume and total precipitation at daily thresholds ranging from 6 mm to 38 mm/day. The study also found that minimum 7-day precipitation amounts of 13-28 mm were necessary to trigger recharge events, with seasonal variability observed in the minimum antecedent precipitation needed for potential recharge events.

Accurate dating of stalagmites from low seasonal contrast tropical Pacific climate using Sr 2D maps, fabrics and annual hydrological cycles

Mohammadali Faraji et al.

Summary: This study successfully constrained the chronology of a Cook Islands stalagmite using synchrotron mu XRF and optical imaging techniques, revealing the relationship between trace elements like Mg, Sr, Ba and Na with hydroclimate environment through principal component analysis. A calendar-year master chronology was generated based on trace element annual banding, with a dating uncertainty maximum of +/- 15 years over 336 years of history.

Are oxygen isotope fractionation factors between calcite and water derived from speleothems systematically biased due to prior calcite precipitation (PCP)?

Michael Deininger et al.

Summary: Many studies aim to determine the oxygen isotope fractionation factor between calcite and water (α(calcite/H2O)), but cave studies suggest that speleothem calcite is formed under kinetic conditions rather than thermodynamic equilibrium, leading to significant variability in the determined values.

Stalagmite carbon isotopes suggest deglacial increase in soil respiration in western Europe driven by temperature change

Franziska A. Lechleitner et al.

Summary: The temperate region of western Europe underwent significant climatic and environmental change during the last deglaciation. This study quantifies and removes the effects of prior calcite precipitation and bedrock dissolution on the delta(13)Cspel signal to derive changes in respired delta C-13, shedding new light on soil respiration during past climatic transitions.

Measurement report: Spatial variability of northern Iberian rainfall stable isotope values - investigating atmospheric controls on daily and monthly timescales

Ana Moreno et al.

Summary: This article presents a large dataset of precipitation isotopic measurements in northern Spain from 2010-2017, aiming to characterize the variability of rainfall isotopes at daily and monthly timescales and assess the factors influencing this variability. The study found that air temperature and precipitation play different roles in determining the stable isotope composition of precipitation along a west-to-east transect, with the importance of air mass source, trajectory, and type of precipitation (convective versus frontal rainfall) in shaping the isotopic composition of rainfall in northern Iberia.
