Creating Optimal Pockets in a Clathrochelate-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Gas Adsorption and Separation: Experimental and Computational Studies

Wei Gong et al.

Summary: In this work, a highly porous and robust metal-organic framework (MOF) called NU-200 was successfully designed and synthesized. Computational simulations showed that the hierarchical bowl-shaped nanopockets in NU-200 played a crucial role in enhancing the affinity for xenon. The unique pocket confinement effect was validated using a similarly sized probe, sulfur dioxide.

Responsive Porous Material for Discrimination and Selective Capture of Low-Concentration SO2

Zhengdong Guo et al.

Summary: This study reports the efficient capture of low-concentration SO2 with high selectivity over CO2 using Mn(INA)2 with a designed pore structure. The material exhibits large cavities and narrow bottlenecks, allowing for the exclusion of larger molecules and the accommodation of SO2 molecules. The high-density host-guest interactions contribute to the sensitive response towards low-concentration SO2. Breakthrough experiments further demonstrate the efficient capture properties of Mn(INA)2.

Adsorption of Sulfur Dioxide in Cu(II)-Carboxylate Framework Materials: The Role of Ligand Functionalization and Open Metal Sites

Weiyao Li et al.

Summary: We report high adsorption of SO2 in a series of Cu(II)-carboxylate-based metal-organic framework materials. The functionalization of ligands and the presence of open metal sites contribute to the reversible adsorption of SO2. Specifically, MFM-101 and MFM-190(F) exhibit fully reversible SO2 adsorption with the highest capacities among all reported porous solids under ambient conditions.

Pillared-layer ultramicroporous material for highly selective SO2 capture from CO2 mixtures

Zhengdong Guo et al.

Summary: A highly-stable ultramicroporous material CPL-1-NH2 was reported for efficient separation of low concentration SO2 and CO2, with high separation selectivity. The narrow channel with lined amino groups in this material exhibits significantly higher affinity to SO2 than CO2, demonstrating good capture performance even in the presence of CO2 and trace moisture.

Summary: The study demonstrates the deep removal of SO2 at ultra-low pressure using ionic ultramicroporous polymers with high uptake capacity and selectivity. The construction of uniform ultramicropores via polymerizing ionic monomers allows for full utilization of selective anionic sites. The tuned aperture size and surface chemistry of IUPs play a critical role in excluding unwanted gases and improving separation selectivity.

Comparative Evaluation of Different MOF and Non-MOF Porous Materials for SO2 Adsorption and Separation Showing the Importance of Small Pore Diameters for Low-Pressure Uptake

Philipp Brandt et al.

Summary: The search for adsorbents for flue gas desulfurization processes is a current interest. The experimental study found that microporous materials with pore sizes in the range of 4-8 angstrom or with nitrogen heterocycles are optimal for SO2 uptake in the low-pressure range. Zeolite Y and SAPO-34 were found to be stable toward humid SO2, and Zeolite Y and CTF-1(600) showed the most promising SO2/CO2 selectivity results.

Summary: This study conducted the first experimental investigation on porous organic cages (POCs) for capturing SO2. It was found that a tertiary amine POC (6FT-RCC3) exhibited high and reversible SO2 capture, demonstrating excellent performance for at least 50 adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorption behavior was analyzed using FTIR spectroscopy, C-13 CP-MAS NMR experiments, and computational calculations.

Zirconium and Aluminum MOFs for Low-Pressure SO2 Adsorption and Potential Separation: Elucidating the Effect of Small Pores and NH2 Groups

Philipp Brandt et al.

Summary: Research on Zr- and Al-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for SO2 adsorption showed that frameworks with pore sizes in the range of 4-8 angstroms exhibit optimal sorption capabilities at low pressures. MOFs with NH2 functional groups tend to have enhanced affinity for SO2. Stability tests and density functional theory (DFT) simulations provided insights into the adsorption mechanisms and binding energies of different MOFs towards SO2.

Capture and Separation of SO2 Traces in Metal-Organic Frameworks via Pre-Synthetic Pore Environment Tailoring by Methyl Groups

Shanghua Xing et al.

Summary: In this study, a pre-synthetic pore environment design strategy was utilized to create stable methyl-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for enhanced low pressure SO2 adsorption and separation from CO2. The key role of increasing methyl group densities at the benzenedicarboxylate linker in optimizing pore size was demonstrated for the first time. Various methods, including gas sorption isotherms, theoretical calculations, simulations, and DFT calculations, were used to validate the SO2 separation potential of methyl-functionalized MOFs.
