Prenatal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and effects on neonatal anthropometric indices and thyroid-stimulating hormone in a Middle Eastern population

Samaneh Dehghani et al.

Summary: The study found no significant relationship between prenatal exposure to PAHs in pregnant women and newborn health indicators. There was a significant correlation between exposure to passive smoke and total PAHs concentrations, providing important insights for future research on PAH intake sources.

Ecological study of ambient air pollution exposure and mortality of cardiovascular diseases in elderly

Samaneh Dehghani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and cardiovascular disease mortality and risk factors in the elderly population in Iran. The results showed a positive correlation between ambient air pollution and cardiovascular disease mortality, as well as the prevalence of high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol levels, high body mass index, and type 2 diabetes. Evidence from this study suggests that ambient air pollution directly and indirectly affects cardiovascular disease mortality by increasing the prevalence of some traditional risk factors.

Nutritional Status of Iodine in a Group of Pregnant Women from the State of Minas Gerais Correlated with Neonatal Thyroid Function

Natalia Campos Goncalves Scherr et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the iodine sufficiency of pregnant women at a university hospital and correlated the urinary iodine concentrations with fetal thyroid hormone levels at birth. The study found that the pregnant women had sufficient iodine levels and there were no cases of neonatal hypothyroidism.

Relationship between urinary metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and risk of papillary thyroid carcinoma and nodular goiter: A case-control study in non-occupational populations

Boying Liu et al.

Summary: Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may increase the risk of thyroid nodular goiter (NG)/papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), with a gender-specific effect observed. Elevated concentrations of specific OH-PAHs in NG and PTC patients are associated with increased disease risk.

Summary: Exposure to mercury and cadmium may disrupt thyroid hormones, possibly through alteration of deiodinase activity. The association of exposure to PAHs with thyroid hormones appears to be insignificant.

Delivery factors and neonatal thyroid hormone levels: a systematic review

Fahimeh Ramezani Tehrani et al.

Summary: The review found a strong relationship between delivery factors such as mode of delivery, labor pains, and duration of labor, and neonatal thyroid hormones. The majority of studies indicated that vaginal deliveries lead to higher levels of cord TSH compared to elective cesarean section. Maternal, fetal/neonatal, and obstetric factors were also found to affect neonatal TSH and thyroid hormones.
