Can nuclear energy technology budgets pave the way for a transition toward low-carbon economy: Insights from the United Kingdom

Abdullah Emre Caglar

Summary: This research explores the impact of nuclear energy research and development (NRD) on CO2 emissions in the United Kingdom using a non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) approach. The findings confirm the asymmetrical relationship between NRD and CO2, where positive changes in NRD reduce environmental degradation while negative changes hinder environmental sustainability. The study also validates the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis and shows that economic growth and trade openness decrease environmental quality, while financial development contributes to environmental quality. Therefore, increasing resources allocated to NRD budgets and continuing financial deepening activities are important in the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Is reducing fossil fuel intensity important for environmental management and ensuring ecological efficiency in China?

Ugur Korkut Pata et al.

Summary: As China faces severe environmental pollution, researchers have conducted in-depth studies on China's environmental problems using various environmental indicators such as carbon emissions and ecological footprints. Unlike previous studies, this research analyzes the impact of economic growth, globalization, foreign direct investment, and fossil energy intensity on ecological efficiency in China. The results show that globalization and economic growth contribute to improving ecological efficiency, while foreign direct investment and fossil fuel intensity exert a negative impact on China's environmental quality. Based on these findings, the study suggests that the Chinese government should implement policies to direct foreign direct investment towards environmentally friendly production, reduce fossil fuel intensity, and improve ecological efficiency through the utilization of environmentally friendly technologies provided by globalization and economic development.

Foreign direct investment, stock market capitalization, and sustainable development: relative impacts of domestic and foreign capital

Mehmet Akif Destek et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the impacts of domestic and foreign capital on carbon emissions for 42 countries and examine the effects of economic growth, urbanization, trade openness, and energy usage on the environment. The findings reveal that domestic capital accumulation in countries with low emission levels is more environmentally efficient than in countries with high emission levels, while foreign capital has no substantial effect on emission levels for all countries.

Militarization of NATO countries sparks climate change? Investigating the moderating role of technological progress and financial development

Ugur Korkut Pata et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of military expenditures (MEX) on environmental pollution and analyzes the moderating role of factors such as financial development and technological progress for 15 NATO member countries. The results show that income, energy consumption, and MEX contribute to a rise in emissions. Technological progress has a moderating effect, while the financial sector does not mitigate the detrimental ramifications of MEX on the environment. It is important for NATO countries to evaluate and revise the financing of MEX from an environmental perspective for sustainable development.

Is export quality a viable option for sustainable development paths of Asian countries?

Muge Manga et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the role of export quality in climate action goals in emerging Asian countries. It constructs an empirical model to analyze the impact of real GDP, energy use, and export quality index on carbon emissions. The findings suggest that increasing export quality leads to a decrease in CO2 emissions in China and India, but an increase in CO2 emissions in Thailand and the Philippines. Additionally, there is evidence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation in China and Thailand.

The role of government spending on energy efficiency R&D budgets in the green transformation process: insight from the top-five countries

Abdullah Emre Caglar et al.

Summary: The transition to a low carbon economy is becoming more feasible with the sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, the reliance on fossil fuels and the need for renewable resources to mature pose challenges. This study examines the importance of energy efficiency research and development (R&D) budgets in the maturation process of renewable energy sources. The findings suggest that the current energy efficiency R&D budgets are insufficient to improve environmental quality, and economic growth and trade openness contribute to environmental damage. The countries with the highest budgets should increase their energy efficiency investments to achieve climate action and affordable and clean energy goals.
